PRESS MENTION 3 March 2015- Etihad Modern Art Gallery is pleased to open a collective exhibition featuring works by Svilen Petrov, Kim Robertson, Karine Roche that will be on view till the end of March. “In this place” is a combination of sculptures, prints, and paintings where each artist explores this land and endeavors to share their own unique vision, transcending the traditional and the romantic vista, offering another reality. Svilen Petrov’s works are traditionally associated with virtuosity of performance and high professional erudition in the process of form construction. His compositions, figures and heads carry a special metaphorical expression achieved by complex treatment of surfaces, seemingly deliberately opposed to the traditional “roughness” of sculpting material. Kim Robertson’s aesthetic evaluation is in parallel with those of the Japanese masters, although not true to form in its execution. Her subjects are typically ‘wabi sabi’; 'non-place' commonly as false environments that are used in new and unique ways, and ‘fragmentation’. To Karine Roche, nature and the city, vegetation and architecture, flora and fauna urban are source of inspiration. These themes serve as a pretext to experiment forms of graphic and colorful harmonies in human constructions associated with organic forms of plant or processing a simple vegetal view into a jungle fantasy. The artists said, “Through each of our unique visions of this land we speak of our individual journeys, portraying a response to this through our chosen mediums. Our work is so disparate in execution but by combining in exhibition there is a harmony and common understanding. We offer one another a balance, a yin and yang of techniques and imagery linked by the one theme of place.” H.E. Khaled Siddiq Al Mutawaa, Founder of Etihad Modern Art Gallery, said “We see this exhibition as a continuation to our previous collection that paid tribute to the UAE and its heritage. The works on display show appreciation to the land by those who come and experience the country and its bounty”.
