We are happy to announce that Athens Technical College was
awarded an “Improving Teacher Quality Grant” for 2013-2014. Thus, this July, we
are again offering our hands-on biotechnology based lab training for teachers. As
always, teachers can also borrow biotechnology lab equipment from Athens
Technical College so that they can do these labs in their own classrooms during the
school year (Since August of 2007, the equipment loan program has served 394
teachers in 49 counties and through them has reached over 33,000 students).
Science education is changing and our activities align with the new Biotechnology
classes and Georgia standards. This July, we are offering a combined Introductory
& Advanced session (with some new labs as well as Hydroponics) and our
attending teachers will have the chance to practice a lab with
a classroom of students on the last day. All classes are cotaught with science teachers that have used these labs in
their middle and high school classrooms. These sessions &

Introductory session activities:
Amanda Latimer MS Biotechnology Outreach Coordinator
Extract Your Own DNA!
(A quick but powerful, human cheek cell DNA activity)
Micro pipetting Activity
(Learn how to use standard laboratory pipettes and have fun while doing it in this easy to do
exercise.)
Bio-Rad Forensic DNA Fingerprinting Kit
(Restriction enzymes are used to cut Lambda DNA and electrophoresis helps separate and
visualize the fragments. This activity opens the door to discussions about forensics, DNA
profiling & genetic engineering. Also learn how to use this activity to teach physics!)
Bio-Rad pGlo Bacterial Transformation Kit Chromatography Lab
(Jellyfish genes make the invisible-visible! Learn
basic microbiology techniques and create your own transgenic bacteria and then learn to
separate a mixture of biomolecules.)
Hydroponics Lab
(This lab will be taught by Christina Hylton a local science teacher. Christina has taught
teachers and students about hydroponics and will be gearing her class to teachers who want to
set up their own hydroponics lab. She will discuss grants and other cost saving ideas.)
Advanced I session activities:
Dr Jeff Rapp Chair of the ATC Biotechnology Department
PCR On Your Own DNA
(Extract your own DNA from an eye brow hair, just like the crime scene investigators do.)
Bio-Rad GMO Investigator PCRKit
(Gather sample foods from your grocery store, extract DNA, amplify it via PCR, and use gel
electrophoresis to identify the presence/absence of GMO sequences.)
Biofuels Enzyme Lab
(Learn how to run Bio-Rad’s most recent kit Biofuel Enzymes. Measure the enzymatic activity
of cellobiase and identify the optimal conditions for the enzyme. The reaction of cellobiase is
important in the process of making cellulosic ethanol.)
On the, fourth day of the classes, you will get a chance to practice teaching one of
the labs that you learned earlier in the week with a group of students at the East
Jackson County High School.
