December 2010 Dear Parents Inspection Following last week’s message regarding the recent inspection, the reports on Senior and Lower Schools are both available on our website. In addition, they have now been published on the ISI website (under ‘Norwich School’ and ‘Norwich Lower School’) alongside the reports from all schools within the main independent school associations. The Norvicensian Copies of our most recent school magazine (covering 2009-10) were sent home via pupils earlier this half term. I hope you agree that it is an engaging and impressive read. Mr Mark Barber (Senior School) and Mr Richard Love (Lower School) deserve particular thanks for co-ordinating and editing the content. We are finding that the Norvicensian is very effective as a publicity tool for the School and look to place copies in offices, businesses etc so that people from outside the school get to see it. If you have any suggestions or wish to request some further copies for that purpose then please contact my secretary, Mrs Karen Moore, on 01603 728442 or kmoore@norwich-school.org.uk. Communication from Parents (Senior School) A gentle reminder: in almost all circumstances, a pupil’s house tutor is the best and preferred first point of contact on pastoral and academic issues; e-mail addresses and contact numbers are listed on our website here. Tutors liaise regularly with housemasters and weighty and serious matters are communicated to senior members of staff as appropriate. Confirmation Classes These will begin in March, towards the end of the Lent Term, and the Confirmation Service for candidates and their families will take place in June. The classes are open to all boys and girls, and there will be separate groups according to the ages of the pupils. Please contact the Chaplain, The Reverend Nic Tivey, on 01603 728450 or ntivey@norwich-school.org.uk if you want to find out more or if your child would like to sign up for the course. Sixth Form The following information is most pertinent for parents with sons and daughters in Upper 5 who wish to be members of our Sixth Form. A minimum of six B grades at GCSE, with A grades in their chosen sixth form subjects, is required in order to enter the Lower Sixth in September 2011. In addition, pupils need to have demonstrated appropriate attitude and effort and be judged to have the potential to be successful and constructive members of the Sixth Form. Any concerns that the School may have will be indicated to individuals prior to the Easter vacation. Jazz Nite 2011 This highly entertaining and popular fundraising event, organised by Coke House, will take place on Saturday 26th March 2011. Further details and information on how to apply for tickets will be sent out in February. Dates for the Future Public examinations commence on Monday 10th January with GCSE English, Maths Core 1 and Maths Mechanics 2. Members of U5 are reminded that they should be in School (from 8.30 am) on the first morning of next term when the GCSE Mock examinations begin. Attendance at games is expected as normal throughout the examination period. Looking further ahead, the Senior School Speech Day and Prizegiving will be in the Cathedral on the afternoon of Saturday, 25th June, following our summer Open Morning. Admission to the Cathedral in the afternoon will be by ticket only and there will be an opportunity to apply at the beginning of the Trinity Term. Priority will be given to parents of leavers and prizewinners. The Lower School Sports and Speech Day will be on Saturday 2nd July 2011. There will be no school on Wednesday 29th June 2011 in order that pupils may attend the Royal Norfolk Show. Trinity Term 2011 will commence on Tuesday 26th April. The Government have declared that (in addition to May Day on Monday 2nd May) the day of the royal wedding, Friday 29th April, will also be a public holiday. I wish you all a happy Christmas and a peaceful New Year. Yours sincerely Jim Hawkins JB Hawkins MA Head Master Norwich School 70 The Close Norwich NR1 4DD 01603 728430 www.norwich-school.org.uk
