NORWICH HIGH SCHOOL FOR GIRLS GDST
HISTORY DEPARTMENT
There are three full-time teachers in the department at present. In the main school building we
have two teaching rooms. Sixth form teaching is mainly carried out in the sixth form block. We
have interactive whiteboards in each teaching room.
In the senior school History is taught from Year 7 up to A level. We aim to teach, as far as possible,
a programme of study which is based on the National Curriculum KS3.
In Year 7 we study ‘Medieval Realms - Britain 1066 – 1500’. There is 1 double period lesson per
week with each class.
For Year 8 we study the ‘Making of the United Kingdom 1500 – 1750’. There is 1 double period
lesson per week with each class.
Year 9 study ‘Empire, the Impact of Industrialisation and War 1750 – 1945’. There is 1 double
period lesson per week with each class.
Our GCSE groups cover the OCR Modern World Syllabus. For Paper 1 we study the Cold War 1945 –
1975 along with the USA 1919 – 1941. For Paper 2 we study Britain 1906 – 1918. For the Controlled
Assessment task we study Germany 1918 – 1945.
Teaching is over 4 periods per week which are delivered in two double periods.
From 1st teaching September 2015 the new liner A level syllabus is with AQA. We will be studying
1K The Making of a Superpower: 1865 – 1975 and 2B The Wars of the Roses: 1450 – 1499. There is
also a piece of coursework which will be focused on Tudor Rebellions. Our sixth form History cohort
is usually around 10 to 15 pupils each year. There are usually two teaching groups in both lower
and upper sixth. Teaching is 8 periods per week in the Lower and Upper Sixth.
Overall the department aims to develop in the pupils an enthusiasm for exploring the past, respect
for historical evidence, and a capacity for written work, debates and group work.
Government and Politics
We also offer Government and Politics as an AS and A Level in the Sixth Form. We follow Edexcel,
AS GCE in Government & Politics and Advanced GCE in Government & Politics – International
Relations.
The AS course is British based covering political concepts, the machinery of government and current
political affairs. The A2 course looks at international events in the last 50 years and covers some
undergraduate theories and concepts. Our sixth form Politics cohort is usually around 6 to 12 pupils
each year. There is usually one teaching group in both Lower and Upper sixth. Teaching is 8 periods
per week in the Lower and Upper Sixth.
