Course Description
This course introduces the basic concepts of general, organic & biochemistry
which is helpful to nursing students. Lecture topics will include but are not limited
to,
general concepts involving scientific measurements, nomenclature, molar and
percentages in mathematics, reactions & solutions; basic organic nomenclature
and
structure of hydrocarbons and functional groups; and the fundamentals of
carbohydrates, lipids, proteins and enzymes. The instructional approach in this
course will emphasize how these chemical concepts affect the human body.
Prerequisites
Math 134 with a C or better
Required Text
Armold, 2001. Essentials of General, Organic, & Biological Chemistry
Supplementary Materials
You will need to bring a calculator to class; it will be used on a daily basis to
figure problems. I will distribute other materials as needed during the semester.
Descriptive Reading Load
I will announce after each class what we will be covering during the next class
period. It is your responsibility to stay on top of the reading and to come to class
prepared for discussion.
Lakota Perspective
Everyone will be treated with respect and fairness.
Course Requirements
1. Class Attendance: same as collage policy. Dropping students is up to my
discretion.
If you are unable to attend class let me know (phone: 605-455-6136)
2. lf you miss a class it is your responsibility, not mine, to make sure that you
receive all assignments and instructions. I will leave a folder in the classroom
with copies of all handouts. Please check this fold if you miss class.
4. All OLC, Nursing and Math and Science Departmental policies apply to this
class.
Evaluation & Markings
1. Homework Problems: Assignments will be made for each chapter of study.
Homework problems from the book will not be collected or graded but you are expected to complete the assignment. The homework is a valuable tool that
will help you become successful and help you in the exams.
This semester we will also work extensively on math and math calculations.
Several math assignments will be given through the semester which will be
collected but not graded.
2. Quizzes: Quizzes will be given on Wednesday during class time unless
otherwise stated. Questions for the quiz will resemble your homework
assignment. Hence, l know who did their homework and understands the
material.
3. Exams: 4 lecture exams are planned. Note: All exams may be
comprehensive. This means that exams may contain questions on topics
covered in previous exams.
Exam dates are tentative, exact dates will be announced in class at least
one week prior to the exam.
There will not be Makeup exams given.
Grading
Point Breakdown.
Exam 1-4 (100 pts x 4) = 400 pts.
(Quizzes (approximately 10pts x 8) = 80 pts.
Homework = 60 pts.
Total = 540 pts
