PORTORA ROYAL SCHOOL JOB DESCRIPTION SUBJECT CO-ORDINATOR: MUSIC The purpose of a job description is to set out a fair, clear and mutually understood statement of the grading and salary of the post held by the teacher and the work and responsibility reasonably attached to that post. A job description does not qualify a teacher’s obligation to undertake these duties under the reasonable direction of the Headteacher; but it indicates how these generic duties are expected to apply to the teacher’s work in the school. No teacher can be required by means of a job description to undertake duties which are not part of the statutory list of duties laid down in the Pay and Conditions Document. Certain job descriptions may specify, however, curriculum-related responsibilities that do not always take place during the school day. Such activities may include, for example, music productions or out-of-school visits. Time spent on such activities is part of directed time and counts towards the 1265 hours. Where the work is undertaken other than during one of the school days, it should be one of the 195 days or, if involving work with pupils, one of the 190 days. 1. Purpose of the Job As the only music teacher in the school, the incumbent will be expected to provide leadership in the development and management of Music within the Creative and Expressive Learning Area; to teach pupils within the school and to carry out such other associated duties as are reasonably assigned by the Headteacher. 2. Applicable Contract Terms and Duties This job description is to be performed in accordance with the provisions of the Teachers’ Pay and Conditions Document, and within the range of duties set out in that document so far as relevant to the postholder’s title and salary grade. Relationships The postholder is responsible to the Headteacher in all matters and to the Head of the Creative and Expressive Learning Area in respect of curricular matters and the Head of Key Stage in pastoral matters. The postholder also interacts on a professional level with colleagues and seeks to establish and maintain productive relationships with them and to promote mutual understanding of the school curriculum with the aim of improving the quality of teaching and learning in the school. 5. The Main Duties of a Subject Co-ordinator, Music are Teaching: To undertake an appropriate programme of teaching in the subject area in accordance with the duties of a standard scale teacher. Operational/ Strategic Planning To develop and review syllabuses, resources, schemes of work, marking policies, assessment and teaching and learning strategies in the department. To play a leading role in the control and operation of course provision within the department, including effective deployment of staff and physical resources. To actively monitor and follow up pupil progress To work with colleagues to formulate aims, objectives and strategic plans for the department which have coherence and relevance to the needs of pupils and to the aims, objectives and strategic plans of the School. Curriculum To liaise with Vice Principal or other member of the Senior Leadership team to ensure the delivery of an appropriate, comprehensive, high quality and costeffective curriculum programme which complements the School Improvement Plan/School Evaluation. To keep up to date with and respond to national developments in the subject area and teaching practice and methodology. Quality Assurance: To have a role in establishing common standards of practice within the department and in developing the effectiveness of teaching and learning styles. To ensure that the quality procedures in the subject area meet the requirements of Self Evaluation and the School Development Plan. To have a lead role in the production of examinations analysis and subject area review as part of the school’s self-evaluation cycle. Management Information: To ensure the maintenance of accurate and up-to-date information concerning the department on the management information system. To analyse and evaluate, with others in the subject area, performance data provided and take appropriate action in response. Additional Key Tasks to co-ordinate, plan and lead school music, including the annual carol service and other arts productions related to the teaching of music and the performing arts within the school and to organise and lead similarly related visits to curriculumrelated performances musical and other arts events as seen fit; to make contributions relating to materials published about the school; to undertake in rotation with other members of the Creative and Expressive Learning Area assigned administrative functions in relation to Faculty meetings, and to oversee the work of peripatetic music tutors and monitor ongoing uptake of lessons to ensure accurate billing.
