NATIVE TRIBAL SCHOLARS PROGRAM
Position Opening: Summer Instructors
Instructors wanted for the following positions:
Native Literature, MCAS/SAT Mathematics, Tribal Environmental Science, Tribal Sovereignty
Dates: July 1 –August 9, 2013
Program Objectives:
The goal of the Native Tribal Scholars Program is to provide Native American high school students
with the skills and motivation necessary for access to and success in post-secondary education. NTS
offers an array of academic, personal enrichment and college/career services designed to
supplement public high school education and tailored to address specific student needs.
Summer courses are designed to prepare participants for rigorous postsecondary programs of study.
The curriculum is focused on engaging and challenging students, as well as developing their
academic skills. All students take courses in mathematics, science, Native American literature and
tribal sovereignty. Program instructors weave a Native American studies focus into their courses by
developing content and activities around tribal interests. Instructors will also incorporate culturally
relevant themes and projects into the daily lesson plans and curriculum.
Instructor Responsibilities:
1. Participate in staff orientation, curriculum development and classroom facilitation.
2. Participate in weekly teacher meetings.
3. Develop summer curriculum in collaboration with NTS administrative team and teach course(s)
to students enrolled in the program.
4. Work collaboratively with the other instructors to ensure that related courses are integrated.
5. Communicate student progress to residential staff, administrative staff, and students’ families.
6. Complete weekly progress reports, a mid-term evaluation and a final evaluations of students, a
final course summary, and a program evaluation.
7. Attend and participate in Family Day

Education Department
Requirements:
1. Bachelor's degree in a relevant field. Master's degree preferred.
2. Teaching experience, preferably with Native youth.
3. Demonstrated teaching philosophy and methods that encourage the development of active and
independent learning habits.
4. Demonstrated ability to develop and implement curricula collaboratively.
Additional Information:
Class Projects & Curriculum Development Training: During the summer program, each course
focuses on one overarching project that guides the content and skills you want your students to
learn and apply. Students may work in groups or individually on the class project. Former projects
have included booklets of student writing, public service announcements, and a scaled model of a
city built using specific algebra and geometry guidelines, to name a few. Class projects will be
presented at Family Day; former projects have been presented through display boards, PowerPoint,
live readings, plays, physical models and demonstrations.
Compensation:
Salary: $1,825 per section/$3,650 for both sections.
Supervision Received:
Supervised by the Director.
