Course Title: Maternity nursing
Course Number :NURS 4326
Credits: 3 credits

Course description:
Maternity nursing is a comprehensive interesting course that is designed to
provide nursing students with a broad base of knowledge to develop skills and
attitudes toward the child-bearing process needed to promote maternal health. This
course is based on previous study of anatomy, physiology, nutrition,
pharmacology and psychosocial sciences.
Maternity nursing focuses on helping families to meet health needs
associated with childbearing experience which includes:
1. Avoiding or achieving pregnancy.
2. Maintaining, monitoring or interrupting pregnancy.
3. The normal anatomic, physiologic and psychological adaptation to pregnancy
and child bearing.
4. Preexisting and coexisting medical disorders.that may affect pregnancy.
5. Pregnancy-related health problems .
The goal of the course:
The course aims to enable students to acquire the knowledge, skills and
attitudes needed to maintain maternal health, prevention and early diagnosis of
health problems and minimizing maternal and infant health-related problems.
Course objectives:
On completion of this course the student will be able to:
1. Identify the importance of preconception care for the woman and the role
of the nurse to promote them.
2. Have the knowledge background in human reproduction.
3. Utilize nursing process in maternity care .
4. Understand the current role of the nurse in maternity care.
5. Explain the factors that put a mother in a high-risk category and
interventions to decrease their incidence.
6. Do physical assessment for pregnant mothers and identify early deviations .
7. Provide an ongoing care during the antenatal period .

8. Understand the physiological and psychological changes that occur during
the period of pregnancy, labor and postnatal.
9. Utilize effective communication techniques in providing care to mother,
family and newborn .
10. Provide proper care to the mother and the newborn during the postnatal
period based on their needs .
11. Recognize any complications which may arise during the postnatal period
and intervene accordingly
.
Course outline:
 Anatomy and physiology of the reproductive systems.
 Introduction to preconception care.
 Menstrual cycle and menstrual disorders.
 Conception and fetal development .
 Fertility control and fertility management .
 Antenatal care.
 Maternal physiological and psychological changes and adaptation to pregnancy.
 Definition of high risk mothers, their early diagnosis and care .
 The labor process.
 Care of the mother and newborn during the postnatal period .
 Complications of labor and pregnancy.
 Operative obstetrics
 Induction of labor.
 Postpartum complications .
 Pharmacology of maternity nursing .
