The Gadfly Society Constitution
ORGANIZATION NAME: “The Gadfly Society”
ORGINIZATIONS PURPOSE: The purpose of The Gadfly Society is to provide a forum for voluntary
extracurricular endeavors of interest to philosophy majors, minors, and other philosophically-minded
person, and to promote awareness of the relevance of philosophical perspectives to practical issues.
MEMBERSHIP: Membership in The Gadfly Society is open to students of Houghton College.

Scrivener
Faculty/Staff Advisor
BY-LAWS
MEMBERSHIP: Applications for membership should be made to the Scrivener. Members are required to
attend at least three meetings and/or Society sponsored events per semester. Members who fail to attend
at least three meetings and/or Society sponsored events each semester will automatically become
“inactive.” Membership will be terminated for individuals who remain “inactive” for two consecutive
semesters. “Active” members are members who consistently attend at least three meetings and/or Society
events each semester.
ELECTIONS: Nominations for the above roles will receive at least one week prior to elections, which
must be concluded no more than one week following SGA election for the following academic year.
Officials are elected to one-year terms by simple majority (50% + 1) of active members, and may be
reelected.
DUTIES OF ELECTED OFFICIALS:
Coordinator The Coordinator is responsible to cal and chair meetings of the Society, introduce
speakers, and delegate ad hoc responsibilities in connection with Society activities.
Liaison The Liaison is responsible for publicizing Society-sponsored events as well as communications
between the Society and outside entities (e.g., Student Development, Student Government, Campus
Administration, speakers, etc.)
Scrivener The Scrivener is responsible to maintain financial records and the membership roll of the
Society, recording minutes (as necessary), and all intra-Society communications.
Advisor The Faculty/Staff Advisor is responsible to provide advice to members and elected officials on
Society endeavors.
