Shakin’ out some EQ Knowledge from the ‘net…
In your Science NB or on the lines provided at the bottom of this document, answer the following…
Please go to http://earthquake.usgs.gov/learn/kids/
1) Go to the “Science of Earthquakes” button to explain the following:
a. Why does the earth “shake” in an earthquake?
b. Explain the difference between P-waves & S-waves AND why we need to know
about them to better understand earthquakes.
c. Record 5 pieces of important earthquake knowledge that you want to remember
from this page.
d. Why can’t scientists predict EQs?
2) Go to the “Today in EQ History” button and record the EQ history for your birthday.
3) From the menu on the left side of the page, select “FAQs” and then select the
“Common Myths about Earthquakes”. Pick one of the questions—summarize what the
myth is and what the geologists answer to it is.
Now go to http://www.thetech.org/exhibits/online/quakes/overview/
4) Go to the “Seismographs” button and read the next 4-5 slides. Explain what
seismograph technology used to be like and what it’s like now.
5) Look at the following sites and Compare & Contrast the Mercalli Modified Scale with
the Richter Scale: http://www.geo.mtu.edu/UPSeis/Mercalli.html &
http://www.buzzle.com/articles/richter-scale-for-kids.html
Go to http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eqarchives/
6) What’s one thing surprising that you learned from this site?
Go to http://earthquake.usgs.gov/learn/topics/megaquakes.php
7) How likely is it to have a “Mega-Quake”—an earthquake of magnitude 10 or greater?
Why?
