Welcome!
Welcome to Math 10 Foundations/Pre-Calculus for semester 2 of the 2012/2013 school year! I
am looking forward to the semester. This is a very demanding course, and you should expect to
have some practice to complete at home most days. One of the major keys to success is
communication between parent, student and teacher. The easiest way to communicate with me is
by email. My email address is: ksimpson@srsd119.ca . Please feel free to email me if you have
any questions or concerns.
I am trying to collect email addresses from all parents/guardians, so would appreciate it if you
could send me an email in the next few days so that I have your correct address. If you do not
have email, and need to contact me, you can leave a message at 922-3115 ext 357. I try to
check my voicemail once a day, and may not be able to return your call until the next day. Please
leave a number where you can be reached during the school day.
Throughout the semester you may require some assistance outside of class time. Please take
advantage of the free tutoring in the library Mon -Thurs after school, or book an appointment
with me.
Website
My website is located at https://ca.srsd119.ca/content/mrs-simpson You can also access it
through the Carlton Home Page. On my home page I will have the course outline posted, the
rubric for each outcome, and I will have video lessons posted. If you are going to be away from
class you are able to watch the lesson from home. If you need to review an outcome, you can go
back and watch the lesson. The lessons will not be deleted and will be up the entire semester.

Carlton Math Department
The Aim of Mathematics: The K-12 aim of mathematics curricula is to help students develop the understanding and
abilities necessary to be confident and competent in thinking and working mathematically in their daily activities and
ongoing learning and work experiences. The mathematics program is intended to stimulate the spirit of inquiry within
the context of mathematical thinking and reasoning.




The Goals of Mathematics: The K-12 goals of mathematics are:
Logical Thinking – students will develop and be able to apply mathematical reasoning processes, skills, and strategies to
new situations and problems
Number Sense – students will develop an understanding of the meaning of, relationships between, properties of, roles of,
and representations (including symbolic) of numbers and apply this understanding to new situations and problems.
Spacial Sense – students will develop an understanding of 2D shapes and 3D objects, and the relationships between
geometrical shapes and objects and numbers, and apply this understanding to new situations and problems
Mathematics as a Human Endeavour – students will develop an understanding of mathematics as a way of knowing the
world that all humans are capable of with respect to their personal experiences and needs
Outcomes: What students are expected to know and be able to achieve.
Math Website
The math department website can be accessed through Carlton’s Home Page:
https://www.carlton.srsd119.ca/wordpress/
On this site you will find links to each teacher’s home page, outcome rubrics for the math classes, and video lessons for
some of the classes (we are working to complete video lessons for all classes)
Math Help
Throughout the semester you may require some assistance outside of class time. There are some options for you:
Please take advantage of the free tutoring in the library Monday-Thursday after school from 3:30 – 4:30. (This may be
shortened to Tuesday – Thursday if required)
You can watch the video lessons that are on the math website (currently only the Foundations and Pre-Calculus courses
have these)
For math 9 students only: you can attend noon hour math help on Tuesday or Thursday. A schedule will be posted in
your teacher’s room.
4)
Please ask your teacher for their extra help schedule.
Math Necessities
Students will require a scientific calculator. They are unable to use a cell phone/ipod for a calculator during
assessments.
Assessment
You will not see percentage grades on any of your assignments. Every assignment will be graded on a 4 point
scale using a rubric. These rubrics are posted on the math website, so you can see what each level means.
Instead of one overall grade for an assessment, you may have multiple levels for specific outcomes.
There has been a lot of research done recently on how the 4 point system is more effective than the 100 point
scale. Students will have a better idea of where they are and what they need to do to get to the next level. The
general math rubric is described below. For each outcome there will be a more specific rubric so that students
will know exactly what they need to do to improve to get to the next level.
The student can continue to work on any outcome and reassess it throughout the year. A minimum of level 2 is
required on EVERY outcome in order to receive the credit for this class. At midterm, you will receive a
progress report which will indicate what level each outcome is currently at. If there are any outcomes below a
level 2, you are in danger of not receiving the credit and must work to improve these.
You will NOT see a percentage grade until the final report card (math 9 will never see a percentage grade).
This may be a change for many of you! Instead of focusing on what your “average” grade is, you can think
about:
Are doing the best you can?
Are you learning and improving?
What outcomes do you still need to work on?
Are you meeting Level 2 on all outcomes?
There are videos explaining the reason for this change that you can watch. They are posted on the math
website – parent video on assessment and math talk video. If you have more questions on this please feel free
to contact your teacher!

Mrs. Simpson’s Assessment Policy
Assessments:
All students are expected to write the assessment on the assessment day. Students who must be away from class
(illness, appointment) must have the absence excused, prior to the assessment period.
Reassessments:
All outcomes must be assessed to at least a level 2 in order to complete this course. This means that some students may
need to reassess one or more outcomes throughout the semester. Reassessments will take place at lunch on Tuesday and
Thursday. A schedule will be posted in the classroom with the teacher supervisor and room number for each day. You
must be in the room by 12:20.
Reassessments are open to any student who wishes to improve their level of understanding. In order to reassess,
students must complete a request for reassessment. Reassessment requests must be submitted at least one day prior to
reassessing.
Students with outcomes below a level 2, are encouraged to reassess as soon as possible. Students with outcomes below a
level 2 may have a contract sent home. This contract will outline the outcomes that need to be reassessed, and the date
that they need to be reassessed by. The contract will be signed by both the student and parent and returned to the
teacher the next day.
Students who do not fulfill their contract will assess this outcome 100% on their final summative assessment. This may
mean that additional questions may be added to the final. Students who continually do not meet contract deadlines, may
be removed from the course.
Students who fulfill their contract, but do not achieve at least a level 2 will be given a new contract date.
Please remember that all outcomes must be assessed to a level 2 or higher in order to receive credit for this course.
