JUNE 8, 2014 PENTECOST SUNDAY VIGIL: GN11:1-9 OR EX 19:3-8A, 16-20B OR EZ 37:1-14 OR JL 3:1-5 ROM 8:22-27 JN 7:37-39 (62) EXTENDED VIGIL: GN 11:1-9 EX 19:3-8A, 16-20B EZ 37:1-14 JL3:1-5 ROM 8:22-27 JN 7:37-39 (62) DAY: ACTS 2:1-11 1COR 12:3B-7, 12-13 JN 20:19-23 (63) The hand of the Lord came upon me, and he led me out in the spirit of the Lord and set me at the center of the plain, which was now filled with bones. He made me walk among the bones in every direction…He asked me: ‘Son of man, can these bones come to life?...’ ‘See I will bring spirit into you, that you may come to life’… “In the same way, the Spirit too comes to the aid of our weakness.” The great celebration of Pentecost: we are given new life today, not just recalling the Jerusalem event. We cannot waste this special moment. Some may remember the song ‘Dry Bones’ popular more than a generation ago. The song retraced step by step the coming of the bones to life. That was the promise made in Ezekiel’s vision, as the passage says, ‘I have promised and I will do it, says the Lord.’ The Spirit has been given to us, the entire church, as a continuing outpouring of grace. We celebrate its coming asking that it fall afresh upon us, to animate, motivate and direct us, to do new and exciting things. We roll up our sleeves, ask what must be done and act upon it. Surely the call and example of Pope Francis is a sign of that same Spirit giving life to our sometimes tired, dry bones. Get out and do something he tells us. The hand of the Lord holds me, asking me to walk in the valley of dry bones, and bring God’s Spirit to others who can come to life through our witness in deed and word. His Word Today by Rev. William J. Reilly OUR COLLECTION PARISH REBUILT BRAINSTORMING SESSION Part 2 of our discussion: How can St. Joseph’s—a dynamic and growing parish—become the best version of itself? This meeting is open to all parishioners who have invested the time to read the book and who wish to explore the programs recommended there. The exact location of this event will be determined by the number of attendees. PAX CHRISTI TORTURE AWARENESS MONTH It is the Feast of Pentecost, a day to celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit given to all of us. It is a reminder that Jesus did not abandon us. It is a lesson that we are all one. Yet, we often fail to celebrate, remember, or learn. It is also Torture Awareness Month. Join the Metro New York Religious Campaign against Torture for a dramatic reading and discussion on the topic on Wednesday, June 11th at 7:00 pm in Casserly Hall. Sadly, torture still exists, denying the Spirit in each of us and rejecting our unity in the Spirit. As the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops wrote: “Torture violates the basic dignity of the human person that all religions, in their highest ideals, hold dear. It degrades everyone involved—policymakers, perpetrators and victims…. Nothing less is at stake in the torture abuse crisis than the soul.” While Jesus may not have abandoned us, we abandon others when we allow torture to happen TALLIS & BYRD: THE TUDOR MASTERS The collection for June 1st, 2014 By Mass as follows: 5:30 pm $856 9:00 am $1,769 11:30 am $1,520 6:00 pm $1,758 Sunday Mass Total $5,903 Canticum Scholare, an early music ensemble based here at St. Joseph’s Church, will hold its annual concert at St. Joseph’s on Saturday, June 14, 2014 at 7:30 pm. FEAST DAYS, SCRIPTURES, CITATIONS & SPECIAL INTENTIONS HISTORY OF ST. JOSEPH’S CROZIER The crozier (staff) used by Archbishop DiNioa on Sunday, June 1st for the Sacrament of Confirmation has a lovely and timely history. This crozier belonged to William G. Black, the seventh bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Southern Ohio. He was the bishop from 1979-1993. When he was elected, a group of friends who had belonged to his first parish, in Athens, Ohio, commissioned a local artist to make this crozier. They were especially delighted in the top, which they felt was possibly a hook and possibly a fish – both Christian symbols appropriate for the shepherd of a flock. Bishop Black died in July of 2013 at the age of 93. His family is delighted that his crozier is continuing its ministry under the guidance of Fr. John McGuire, OP, a dear friend of the family. The Franciscan Sisters of Allegheny who run The Dwelling Place Shelter for Homeless Women will be selling raffle tickets after all masses. The raffle tickets are the signature annual fundraiser for The Dwelling Place. The Sisters goal is to raise $50,000 in this effort. The Dwelling Place does not receive government funding, therefore all monies raised will benefit the running of the organization, a meal program and a shelter program. The daily meal program is for the women in the shelter, they are fed 3 meals a day including snacks. Once a week, the Sisters also host an open meal program available to all women to come and eat a good meal. Your donation also provides heating costs, in essence, a warm place for the women to live. Please be generous with your support!
