The FSU Department of Communication and Theatre Arts maintains a very active co-curricular
program of activities, including traveling individual speech events and debate teams, and a
theatre season consisting of three or four productions a year. The faculty is committed to a
rigorous curriculum combining strong theoretical training with challenging practical experiences
in all areas of communication and theatre. We encourage active participation and creative,
imaginative engagement in all areas of our program.
The faculty of the Department of Communication and Theatre Arts annually awards six types of
scholarships to our majors and minors in Communication, Oral Communication, or Theatre:
- The William White Scholarships are institutional scholarships awarded by individual
programs.
- The Blanche Kinney Endowment Scholarships are cash awards to students in
Communication, Oral Communication, and Theatre.
- The Mansfield M. and Alberta Ramage Neely Scholarships are cash awards to students
in Communication, Oral Communication, and Theatre.
- The B. J. O'Dell Sherman Scholarship is an annual cash award to students in Theatre or
Oral Communication.
- The Marion County Little Theatre Scholarship is an annual cash award to students in
Theatre.
- The Neely Freshman Communication Arts Scholarship is an annual cash award to
a freshman student in Communication or Oral Communication.
Additionally, the Lundix and Angela Saverino Scholarship, rotates between the Art, Music, and
Communication and Theatre Arts departments on a three-year cycle.
Scholarship applicants are evaluated on the basis of academic merit, talent and participation, and
financial need. All scholarship recipients are expected to major or minor in Communication,
Oral Communication, or Theatre, to maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or above
and to actively and consistently participate in the co-curricular programs of the Department of
Communication and Theatre Arts.
Auditions and interviews for scholarship applicants are conducted in February. Upon receipt of
your scholarship application you will be contacted to schedule an appointment. In addition to
bringing the materials listed on the application, you should come prepared to present a short twoto three-minute oral presentation of your work. This could be an excerpt of a speech prepared
for competition, a stage role, an interpretation selection, a presentation of a design/activity
portfolio, or anything else that showcases your talents and accomplishments.
