Painting and Sculpture, 17th to 20th century
Villa Vauban – Luxembourg City Art Museum
29.11.2014 > 31.01.2016
In the context of its exhibition series focusing on its in-house collection, Villa Vauban is displaying a
selection of sculptures, paintings and drawings. The exhibition features many works of art that have only
rarely or else never been exhibited before.
The ground floor of the modern extension wing hosts a daylight sculpture gallery showcasing 20 works from the
19th and 20th century, including marble sculptures by Lorenzo Nencini (1806-1854) and bronze works by
Luxembourg sculptors Claus Cito (1885-1962) and Auguste Trémont (1892-1980).
The basement takes visitors on a discovery of 50 paintings and more than 30 drawings, featuring Dutch genre
scenes and landscapes from the 17th century (Pieter Brueghel the Younger, Jan Brueghel the Younger, David
Teniers, Jan Steen, Jacob Ruisdael) as well as numerous portraits from various periods.
The exhibition presents a captivating contrast of various artistic genres, providing – in quick motion almost – an
overview of the key moments of European art history.
