Description
This is a Concurrent Enrollment Course, offering both high school credit through ______________ High
School and college credit through Utah Valley University. Credit from this course is transferable to all
colleges and universities. Contact the receiving institution for how the credits will be applied.
Introduces the various areas of engineering to pre-engineering majors and others interested in learning
more about the contributions engineers make to our modern society. Includes a brief history of engineering
and discussions about what engineers really do. Discusses professional ethics, responsibilities, and career
opportunities. Emphasizes problem solving skills and the processes and procedures of engineering design.
Includes lectures, projects, guest speakers, field trips, and in-class exercises.
Prerequisites
This class is available to all high school juniors and seniors in good academic standing. High school
prerequisites apply. There are no college prerequisites for this course.
Learning Outcomes
1. Demonstrate understanding of the engineering method by completing design projects.
2. Gain knowledge of the engineering profession and different engineering disciplines.
3. Develop teamwork and problem solving skills.
4. Work with modern engineering tools.
5. Interact with and learn from engineers from companies and educational institutions in
the local community in order to make informed educational and career decisions.
Assignments and Assessment
Class Attendance Class time will be used to discuss engineering-related topics, answer your questions,
participate in activities and work on your projects. Assignments will be explained and given in class. It is
difficult to do well in this course if you choose not to come to class.
Homework
There will be several homework assignments throughout the semester that will give you the chance to
further explore the things we talk about in class.

Presentations
Each member of the class will get the opportunity to present in front of the class interesting things they
learn about engineering. The final project will also be presented to the class.
Projects
There will be 4 projects during the semester, the last of which will serve as the course final. All of the
projects are designed to be completed as a group. These projects are meant to be fun and give you the
opportunity to use the engineering method. What you get out of them will be directly proportional to what
you put in.
Real Life Engineering
You will have the opportunity to learn about real life engineering by talking with engineers in industry and
academia. You will arrange your own, personal field experiences where you will do things that are
interesting to you. This may involve attending the lecture of an engineering guest speaker, interviewing an
engineer, setting up a factory tour, visiting a university with an engineering program etc.

Grades and Credit
You will receive the same grade for your high school course as you receive for your college course. Your
grade for this class will become part of your permanent college transcript and will affect your GPA. A low
grade in this course can affect college acceptance and scholarship eligibility.
