1.
Description of your project
Research in Dr. Koti’s laboratory is mainly focused on the problem of resistance to therapy in ovarian cancer, a disease associated with highest mortality rates amongst the female gynecologic malignancies. Management of HGSC based on radiotherapy, surgery and chemotherapy has had limited improvements in increasing patient survival mainly attributed to resistance to current chemotherapy regimens
( http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/types/ovarian , http://www.cancer.ca/en/ cancer-information/cancer-type/ovarian/ovarian-cancer/?region=bc ).
Long-term goal of the research is to delineate the role of immune mechanisms, within the tumor microenvironment, that are involved in differential response to chemotherapy. Understanding the role of tumor immune responses will lead to development of response predictive biomarkers as well as novel targeted immunotherapies in ovarian cancer management. Interested students should preferably have some background in immunology and cancer.
