Dear [Local/State Government Official’s Name],
For more than a decade, September has been designated as National Ovarian Cancer
Awareness Month. On behalf of [Your Organization’s Name] and the many women who are
members of this organization, we respectfully request that September be declared Ovarian
Cancer Awareness Month in [State Name] for 2010.
It is expected that over 21,000 women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer and 15,000 women
will lose their lives from the disease this year alone in the United States. In the state of [State
Name], it is estimated that *[Insert Statistic from Column A] women will be diagnosed with
ovarian cancer this year and *[Insert Statistic from Column B] women will die from the disease.
Ovarian Cancer is the most deadly of all the gynecologic cancers. If detected early and treated
properly, survival rates increase to over 90 percent.
Overwhelmingly, those who have been touched by ovarian cancer stress the need for increased
education and awareness to the public. To date, there is no effective early detection test and
no cure for ovarian cancer. Therefore, the recognition of symptoms is vital to early detection,
when the chance for survival is greatest.
This year, the [Your Organization Name] is hosting [Name Event] on September [Your Event
Date]. This event’s goal is to increase awareness about ovarian cancer among the communities
in which we live and work. We invite you to join on this day.
Recognizing September as National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month will contribute
significantly to the awareness of ovarian cancer and will coincide with hundreds of grass-roots
activities across the country, including health fairs, runs, fund raisers and events. Your
proclamation affirming September 2010 as Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month is a major step in
helping us draw national attention to ovarian cancer.
Thank you for considering our request.
Respectfully yours,
