Prerequisite Knowledge and Skills for This Rehearsal
Students will already have an understanding of level one of rhythmic and tonal
echoing. They will also already know the relationship between sol mi and do for
reading purposes.
Behavioral Objective(s) (with correlated national standards indicated)
During this lesson student will be able to:
 Echo translate level 1 of both tonal and rhythm syllables
 Properly echo the new level 2 syllables for rhythm and tonal
 Sight read tonal alone, rhythmic alone, and the two combined
Materials
 rhythm cards
 transparencies of: blank staff, do-clef, and triad practice
 sight reading pages for: rhythm alone, tonal alone, and combined
 overhead projector
 tonal wand
Procedures
Mental Focus Activity and Sound Vocabulary Development
0:00 1. Rhythm Vocabulary- Simple and Compound Meter
 The students will listen and echo as the teacher models levels 1 and 2
rhythms on Takadmi syllables.
 The students will properly echo translate into Takadimi the rhythms of level
1 the teacher models on a neutral syllable.
1:30 2. Tonal Vocabulary-Major and Minor
 The students will listen and echo as the teacher models levels 1 and 2
patterns on solfege syllables starting on D.
 The students will properly echo translate into solfege the patterns that the
teacher models on a neutral syllable pa.
 Students will “sing what they see” as the teacher uses Curwen hand signs.
Reading
3:00 1. Rhythm Vocabulary
 Students will listen and echo as the teacher introduces the rhythm cards in
simple followed by compound.
 Students will read the cards switching between simple and compound meter.
 Students will read a line of compond level 1 rhythmic patterns from the
overhead on Takadimi syllables (line 2).

Students will read another line of compound level 1 rhythmic patterns from
the overhead on the neutral syllable “pa: (line 3).
7:00 2. Tonal Vocabulary
 Students will follow along as the teacher leads them in tonal reading using
the do clef and tonal wand.
 Students will sing a major pattern with the Triad Practice overlay.
 The students will sing the same exercise but with a moved do on the syllables
pa.
 The students will sing another triad practice overlay but in la minor.
 The students will read a level 1 major cumulative exercise on solfege
syllables (line 3).
 The students will then read another level 1 major cumulative exercise on the
neutral syllable “pa” (line 4).
11:30 3. Melodic Exercise
 The students will read a level 1 cumulative melodic exercise in major and
compound meter on the neutral syllable “pa” (line 3)
