the CBAA Executive Board. Please see below for each candidates’ statement:
ANIKA DANIELS-OSAZE- President
1. Name:
Anika Daniels-Osaze (CBAA Life-Time member)
2. Class Year: 1996
3. College and Major: Arts and Sciences , Linguistics and Cognitive Studies
4. CBAA Executive Position Sought: CBAA President
5. Please tell us why you would like to serve on the CBAA Executive Board?
I currently serve as a member of the CBAA executive board for the term of 2009-2012 as
the Treasurer and I am interested in continuing my service in a different capacity. I have
been committed to the mission of CBAA since I graduated in 1996 and I have been active
with CBAA ever since I was a student.
6. What experience, skills and/or qualifications do you possess that will help you
serve effectively in this position?
Not only do I already have experience as a current board member, I served as the
Northeast Regional Director of the National Association of Medical Minority Educators
(NAMME) for 2 terms (2 years each). I understand the importance of being organized
and available in order to run an effective national organization. I have the ability to
engage current members and mobilize new members into the organization.
7. Please tell us your vision and goals for CBAA and how your role in this position
will help the organization achieve these goals?
My vision for CBAA is one of transparency. I would like to increase member
participation and involvement in decisions that are made in relation to our Black alumni,
students, faculty, and administrators. It is important to support our entire constituency.
We must remember that many of us may not have graduated without the support of the
Black faculty and administrators. It is time to return the favor so that current students
will continue to have advocates on campus. As President, I will serve as a spokesperson
for all of these groups. I will also assist the Vice President for Student Relations in
communicating the needs of all of our constituents. One of the main goals of CBAA
should be to improve its communication system. We need to return to the use of our
newsletter while utilizing the internet and social media. Our website must be updated to
allow for regular use by our general body. We also need to provide more networking
opportunities for our alumni; through mutual support, we can all succeed. Our website
should inform alumni of entrepreneurship and job opportunities, available housing and
other needs.
8. Please tell us about your other Cornell volunteer activities?

9. What thoughts or other information would you like to share with the CBAA

I am committed to CBAA and I want to see the organization grow. While I have been
critical of some of the University’s policies, it’s only because I care about the experience
that our students have while on campus. I am a proud to be a Cornellian and I will
continue to mentor and nurture future Cornellians.

CBAA Executive Position Sought: President
5. Please tell us why you would like to serve on the CBAA Executive Board?
I have had the privilege of serving in several alumni capacities and I think I am the right
person to lead this organization into Cornell’s 150th anniversary. My experiences on the
Hill were similar to many of yours but also not that traditional. I lived in Ujamaa, I was
an Africana major, I was the President of Q&D, I was the President of my class, I danced
in CCSA, and stepped with Phenomenon, I was a Meining Family Nation Scholar, and I
was on the board for FBG. Cornell gave me a platform to do any and everything. The
alumni who were running CBAA at the time I was an undergraduate helped give me
confidence to know I could do anything at Cornell and anything as an Alumni. I don’t
think I had the traditional Cornell experience, I have a passion and respect for that place
and our community in that place that I don’t think many can share because of my
experiences in those four years. It wasn’t just the Black community, or the Africana
Faculty, or the Ujamaa Family that made it special. It wasn’t Liz Moore and Katrina
James reaching out to me as an undergraduate. It wasn’t the relationship with Susan
Murphy, or Dean Hubble, Biddy Martin, Peter Meining, Ezra Cornell or Hunter and
Elizabeth Rawlings that made it special. It was because of all of these people and all of
these experiences that made my time at Cornell so successful and me so far ahead of my
peers now. I think CBAA needs and deserve leadership and direction that can pull from
all of those resources and tap all of those networks to make sure that our community is
thriving and has the chance to succeed. I think I am the person who over the next term
can set our organization on that path to cooperative building within our community, the
university, and other affinity groups.
6. What experience, skills and/or qualifications do you possess that will help you
serve effectively in this position?
While at Cornell, I was president (1) of Quill and Dagger, (2) chapter president of Alpha
Phi Alpha Fraternity, (3) Class of 2003 president, and (4) president of my class at the
University of Georgia School of Law. I have often times found myself standing in a line
with people and everyone steps back and I move to late or I move forward. I think I
understand that leadership and responsibility comes with collegiality but also having a
vision and staying true and steadfast to it. Notwithstanding the many roles and “titles” I
have had over the years I think the two most important skill sets I have and will bring to
this role are resilience and coalition building. Please see attached c.v. for other
information.
7. Please tell us your vision and goals for CBAA and how your role in this position
will help the organization achieve these goals?
Please see my response to question 5 and 9.
8. Please tell us about your other Cornell volunteer activities?
 Class President
 CBAA Vice President Student Relations
 MOSIAC
 Cornell Fund Regional Committee
9. What thoughts or other information would you like to share with the CBAA
constituency?
I have had the privilege of serving on the executive board for the past three years. We
have made major strides within our organization, but there is still work to be done. One
of the problems I see we need to address in this organization is building the bridge
between the experiences that Black Cornellians have had over the past decades. The
experiences of the 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s, and now 10s are all different. The way we view the
university, the way we view Cornell, and the way we view the role of CBAA are all
shaped by those differences. I think I am well positioned to understand those differences
and synthesize them so that our organization retains and gains more credibility with the
alumni base and the university.
JADE PATTERSON- Vice President Programming
1. Name: Jade Patterson
2. Class Year: 2008
3. College and Major: School of Hotel Administration; Hotel Administration
4. CBAA Executive Position Sought: VP Programming
5. Please tell us why you would like to serve on the CBAA Executive Board?
An Executive Board position within CBAA would provide me with an avenue to
make a meaningful impact on my alma mater. While at Cornell I was actively
involved in various student organizations and I vowed to stay connected and to
remain as active as an alumus. Although I have stayed involved through
organizations such as the Cornell Alumni-Student Mentoring Program, The National
Society of Minorities in Hospitality, and even the Cornell Black Alumni Association, I
believe I have the capacity and ability to serve the school and this organization at a
higher level. The organization’s mission aligns with the efforts I’ve already made to
contribute to Cornell’s alumni and student base; therefore I’d be excited to take on
additional responsibility for those endeavors.
6. What experience, skills and/or qualifications do you possess that will help you
serve effectively in this position?
I have several past work and volunteer experiences that provide me with
transferable skills and experiences that would benefit me within this role, including
my role as current CBAA Regional Representative. However, the experience that
stands out the most is my involvement with the National Society of Minorities in
Hospitality. While at Cornell, I served on the National Board for NSMH (Chair 07/08 and Vice Chair 06/07), a student-run organization of over 1,500 students and
over 50 corporate sponsors at the time. The three responsibilities that relate most
to the VP Programming role are 1) learning how to run national chapter
programming campaigns among 50+ chapters and 2) gaining experience with major
event promotion (regional and national conferences), and 3) communication with
officers in different geographic locations. All three of these tasks are required of the
VP Programming Role and I believe I’m well equipped to lead national programming
efforts.
7. Please tell us your vision and goals for CBAA and how your role in this position
will help the organization achieve these goals?
There are 4 goals that I have for CBAA and believe I can help achieve in the VP
Programming position.
1- Bridging the gap between class years – Often the “easiest” program to plan
(for example mixers), are not necessarily the programs that are most appealing to
the entire member base of CBAA. As VP Programming I would make this a priority
when determining which events to execute. Conducting surveys and providing
platforms for alumni to provide feedback on their preferences would be critical
planning forward.
2- Coordination of a National Calendar – Within my 4 years in CBAA, I have
witnessed/learned about some great events organized by the Regional
Representatives. However, I think it is critical that there is a National Programming
Schedule to ensure that these great events are replicated throughout the country.
No matter what city an alum lives in, they should feel that CBAA is catering to their
needs and that there are opportunities to be involved.
3- Consistency – Outside of the National Calendar created by the VP
Programming and Regional Representatives, it is also crucial to choose at least one
or two signature events that will occur every year from here on out for CBAA. In the
same manner that members look forward to CBAA Reunion every two years, there
should be a local event that our membership base should “expect” of the
organization without fail.
4- Student/Alumni Involvement - The organization currently holds an
alumni/student event over Winter Break, however I believe CBAA should become
more active with the current student body. We could incorporate a send off event in
August or end of year mixer in May, to continue to foster a relationship with
students. The visibility of the organization as an undergrad has a direct impact on
recruitment of these same students as alumni.
8. Please tell us about your other Cornell volunteer activities?
My only current Cornell involvements are with CAMSP as a mentor and the alumni
extension of NSMH. As an undergraduate, outside of the organizations addressed
above, I was also Chapter President of Alpha Kappa Alpha and a member of Quill
and Dagger.
9. What thoughts or other information would you like to share with the CBAA
constituency?
As VP Programming, I am also willing to be active within other committees within
CBAA as needed. I think it’s a very powerful organization but can be
marketed/cosponsored better and run more efficiently and transparently.
CAROL MCINTOSH – Vice President Membership
1. Name: Carol McIntosh, M.D., F.A.C.O.G., O.B.E.
2. Class Year: College of Arts and Sciences 1983 and Weill Medical College1987
3. College and Major: College of Arts and Sciences: Biology and Society Major
4. CBAA Executive Position Sought: Vice President of Membership
5. Please tell us why you would like to serve on the CBAA Executive Board?
I have been an alumna since 1983 and from that time on, I have continued to support and
be involved with Cornell University. I usually have worked through the Black
BioMedical and Technical Association (BBMTA) returning yearly for the premed
conference and mentoring to students interested in the health field. In addition, I have
supported CBAA via attending events and meetings. In 1997 I served on the Cornell
University Board of Trustees Alumni Nominating Committee which allowed me to
interact with alumni and represent them as a voice for causes of concern.
Based on my interest and time, I would like to engage our alumni of color on a greater
level and I see CBAA as an excellent foundation from which to continue the work and to
do so on a formal and organized basis.
6. What experience, skills and/or qualifications do you possess that will help you
serve effectively in this position?
I bring long-term experience of organizing groups to provide service. I have overseen,
recruited and organized volunteer mission groups to underdeveloped countries from 1993
to present. In addition, I have the people "personality" to engage people and work with
them towards achieving specific goals as well as the ability to listen and incorporate ideas
that are presented. I also have the ability to understand the various personalities of
people and to be able to bring groups together.
My work as a physician has helped me to develop a listening ear and be able to discern
what a person is trying to get across.
Most importantly, I am able to commit my time to work with CBAA.
7. Please tell us your vision and goals for CBAA and how your role in this position
will help the organization achieve these goals?
I view CBAA as an organization for alumni to come together to network professionally,
socialize and work on problems that may be affecting our students on campus by
connecting us to them as a source for advice and support.
As Vice President of Membership, I would actively recruit alumni to join as well as
publicize the work of CBAA to alumni who may not be active as members. By making
our alumni aware of the power and activities of CBAA, our alumni would seek out
further information and subsequently become members. There is power in numbers and
once we are able to identify our target group, reach out and engage them; the benefits for
members and for CBAA and Cornell University ultimately are limitless.
8. Please tell us about your other Cornell volunteer activities?
As previously stated, I am active with BBMTA as a mentor and a yearly participant in the
annual BBMTA conferences. As an alumna and mentor, I have worked with various
women's groups based out of Cornell University allowing students to shadow me in my
medical practice, I have worked with students on a one on one basis as an alumni
interviewer for the admissions office in the past. I am a member of CBAA of
course. As stated previously, I was a member of the Cornell University Board of
Trustees Alumni Nominating Committee in 1997.
9. What thoughts or other information would you like to share with the CBAA
constituency?
CBAA is an important organization which has done excellent work in the past and
present. I have the time and experience to provide my service to work with CBAA in a
more organized role and provide support towards the continued success of CBAA

EBONY RAY – Vice President Fundraising
1. Name: Ebony Ray
2. Class Year: 2010
3. College and Major: ILR
4. CBAA Executive Position Sought: VP for Scholarship and Funding
5. Please tell us why you would like to serve on the CBAA Executive Board?
I would like to serve on the CBAA Executive Board because I support the CBAA
mission and would like to bring my energy and perspective to the organization. I would
like to aid in positively impacting alumni, current students, and future Cornellians of
color.
6. What experience, skills and/or qualifications do you possess that will help you
serve effectively in this position?
I have experience raising money for a cause in which I believe. As an undergraduate
(specifically 2008-2010), I raised approximately $20,000 for Jamaica Difference, a
grassroots program that I started that sends Cornell undergrads to Jamaica in order to
volunteer in a Kingston elementary school and tour the island. In support of technical
enhancements for the island elementary school, I also secured computer donations (25 in
total) for a computer lab. I have a talent for rallying individuals together around
a unifying cause (e.g. Students for Ken Glover) and for soliciting support for causes in
which I believe. In 2008, I also worked for the Director of Development of the National
Labor College in Silver Spring, Maryland, and with a consultant to create a strategic
fundraising plan for the college. I am friendly, professional, motivated and creative - I
believe these attributes will aid me in being an effective fundraiser.
7. Please tell us your vision and goals for CBAA and how your role in this position
will help the organization achieve these goals?
My goal for CBAA is to continue to revitalize the organization by staying relevant to the
undergraduate and black alumni populations. At the center of the black alumni
experience should be reaching while we climb by expanding upon scholarship and other
gifts. My goals for raising money will be to continue to raise the bar for CBAA's
fundraising by doing the following:
1) Gather information on past donor; establish (or maintain) donor relationships by
providing updates; and create an electronic database of donors (if it doesn't already exist);
2) Set goals for CBAA 2012-2013 academic year fundraising (I would base goals off of
previous fund levels and set a goal to beat previous results).
3) Create and execute a strategic fundraising plan that will include utilizing social media
outlets, undergraduate volunteers, CBAA allies, etc.
8. Please tell us about your other Cornell volunteer activities?

9. What thoughts or other information would you like to share with the CBAA
constituency?
I am excited at the prospect of working with CBAA and am committed to the mission of
the organization. CBAA has accomplished a lot, but I believe that there is still a great
potential in CBAA and would be honored to be a part of the team that helps the
organization realize it.
CYNTHIA CUFFE – Vice President Student Relations
1. Name: Cynthia Cuffie, MD
2. Class Year: ‘74
3. College and Major: College of Human Ecology, Human Nutrition‐ Research
4. CBAA Executive Position Sought: VP Student Relations
5. Please tell us why you would like to serve on the CBAA Executive Board?
As a lifetime member of CBAA and an actively engaged Cornell alum, I am
interested in leading CBAA‘s efforts to increase support of the Cornell Black
student body in ways that are meaningful to today’s students. I am committed to
increasing active alumni engagement and partnerships within and outside the
university to increase the impact of CBAA programs and activities.
CBAA is also at a crossroad regarding the future CBAA membership structure. I
believe I can add value to discussions regarding this issue since I have
experienced similar discussions in another Cornell alumni organization.
6. What experience, skills and/or qualifications do you possess that will help you
serve effectively in this position?
I am an endocrinologist with extensive experience in pharmaceutical clinical
research and development as a senior level executive. To successfully lead global
teams in this industry, I am decisive, collaborative, a problem‐solver, and
committed to coaching and developing others. These are important leadership
behaviors needed to effectively serve in this position. Additionally, I have a long
history of working with students in my professional and personal life (details can
be found in the “Cornell Volunteer Activities” and “Other Information” sections
of questionnaire).
7. Please tell us your vision and goals for CBAA and how your role in this position
will help the organization achieve these goals?
I would like to see CBAA increase engagement between alumni and students that
begins to address diverse issues (e.g., social, academic success, environmental
concerns‐being in Ithaca, career exploration and leadership development). As
appropriate, there should be an increase in strategic partnerships inside and
outside the University. The role of VP of Student Relations in conjunction with
the VP of Programming would take a leadership role in developing a plan and
overseeing the execution of the plan. By doing these things, CBAA would
enhance the Cornell Black student body experience and increase the volunteer
activity level of Cornell Black Alumni.
