Join the NC Civic Education Consortium for an interactive training on teaching high
school students about immigration and its impact on North Carolina’s communities.
Teachers will receive tools for constructively addressing the historical and current controversial
issues surrounding immigration, as well as interactive lesson plans to help students investigate
the myths and realities facing our nation and state today. Teachers will also have the unique opportunity
to dialogue with Paul Cuadros, author of the groundbreaking novel A Home on the Field, the
triumphant true story of a team of Latino high school students and their coach who fought
against the challenges facing immigrants in their small North Carolina town.

The NC Civic Education Consortium has partnered with the UNC Program in the Humanities and Human Values to offer teachers an exciting
examination of recent presidents and their leadership in perilous times. Teachers will receive free admission into the UNC Humanities seminar
“Presidential Leadership in Times of Crisis,” in which three historians will consider the challenges faced by Franklin Delano Roosevelt, George W. Bush,
and Richard Nixon, with comparisons to the present challenges Barack Obama faces. The program will culminate with a panel discussion on presidential
reactions to crisis.
After attending the seminar, teachers will receive interactive training and lesson plans on presidential leadership and related topics created by the NC
Civic Education Consortium. These lessons are designed for easy implementation in the US History classroom; however, the training is open to any

about the leading minds of the American Founding era. The six-week program culminates with a week in historic Washington, D.C. and three hours of college

Constitutional Academy Participants will:
 Engage in weekly online reading discussions with professors and other students
 Work with historical documents at the National Archives
 Visit sites of historical and constitutional significance including George Washington’s Mount Vernon and Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello

NATIONAL HUMANITIES CENTER
SPEND SUMMER 2010 WITH THE NATIONAL HUMANITIES CENTER
In the summer of 2010 the National Humanities Center will offer three live, online professional development seminars exclusively for North Carolina high school
teachers of American history and literature.
The National Humanities Center will provide a stipend of $100 to each participant. Registration is limited to one seminar per educator.
These seminars seek to deepen teacher content knowledge, introduce teachers to fresh primary resources, and offer advice on how to use those resources with
students. They explore documents and images through discussion led by distinguished scholars. Texts come chiefly from the Center's online resources for teachers
Toolbox Library and TeacherServe®.
Each participant will be asked to introduce at least one seminar text into his or her instruction through the use of the Center's Primary Document Classroom
Application Form. Completed forms will be shared on the web.
Participation requires a computer with an internet connection and the capacity to accommodate speakers and a microphone. Request a headset.
Recertification Credit: Three National Humanities Center online seminars will provide ten and a half contact hours or 1 CEU credit. Because the seminars are
conducted online, they may qualify for technology credit in districts that award it. The Center will provide documentation of participation.

Fall 2009 Stock Market Game™ Workshops
Introduction to the Stock Market Game. The primary purpose is to provide an active, motivating device for teaching fundamental economic concepts. The program
is inter-disciplinary and includes standards based lessons and concepts in the areas of mathematics, social studies, economics, language arts, technology, and
business.
Student teams, consisting of 3 to 5 members each, will manage a hypothetical $100,000 portfolio -- investing in common and preferred stocks traded on the NYSE,
AMEX and NASDAQ exchanges, including Initial Public Offerings and Mutual Funds.
Teams will compete for both regional and statewide honors in the following divisions: elementary, middle, high school, college and adult divisions. Awards will
be given in the following categories: Portfolio Value & InvestWrite™ Competitions.

be able to provide leadership in planning and implementing school and system programs to help faculty and students

Globalization: An Introduction for K-12 Teachers immerses teachers from all disciplines and grade levels in an
intensive exploration of the rapid global changes in government, economics, environment and health, culture, and
technology impacting our schools and communities, our country, and the planet. The goal of the course is to help K-12
teachers become aware of the effects of globalization on our world, our country and especially our schools. By the end
of the course, educators should be able to significantly contribute to curriculum planning to help faculty and students

Globalization: An Introduction for Community College Faculty and Administrators immerses community college
educators in an intensive exploration of the international system known as globalization. The course addresses key global
issues in government, economics, cultures, technology, environment and health, culture, and technology impacting our
colleges and communities, our country, and the planet. By the end of the course, educators should be more aware of the
effects of globalization on our world, our country and our colleges. They should be better prepared to plan and implement
