Contest Winner! YOU WON! You are the grand-prize winner of a drawing contest you entered while at the grocery store in September. You and one family member have been flown out to Denver, Colorado for an NFL game between the Denver Broncos and Baltimore Ravens. Gameday: Wake up, take a shower, eat breakfast, brush teeth, grab your bag, and you are off to the airport for your flight to Denver, Colorado. Once you finally get on the plane and listen to your flight instructions, you decide to put your headphones on and enjoy the ride. You’re approaching Denver. You take a moment to think back to the steps that got you to this point. After boarding the plane, you prepared for take-off, the captain turned on the engines, raced down the runway, and began the plane’s ascent into the air. Your flight reached an altitude of 39,000 feet. You are now at 2,000 feet in the air, and descending into the airport, and can’t wait to land on the ground! Time to rent a cab, and head to the hotel. You arrive just in time to change for the game. It’s December, and a bitter-cold day in Denver. The current temperature is 23º F. The temperature is expected to reach a high of 27º F by kickoff (1:00 p.m.). You reach into your suitcase, and after five minutes, you’re ready. You’ve got your cold gear on, gloves, a hat, and two pairs of pants. This is shaping up to be a great day. You arrive to Mile High Stadium, home of the Denver Broncos. The stadium lives up to its name and sits exactly one mile (5,280 feet) above sea level. Your seats however, will take you higher than the current 5, 280 feet. You will need to travel an extra 187 feet up to your seats. You sit in your seats, and the atmosphere is amazing. Fireworks explode, Blue Angel airplanes soar over the stadium, and the national anthem is sung by one of your favorite singers. The game kicks off, and it’s everything you dreamed it would be. By half time, the Ravens are winning the game. You decide to grab a bit to eat. You arrive at the concession stand with $20.00 in your pocket. You buy a coke, soft pretzel, and a hot-dog. You leave the concession stand with $9.00 in your hand, head back to your seat, and watch the second half of the game. The Ravens Win! Now it’s time to go back to the hotel and get ready for dinner. As you’re leaving the stadium, you see a vendor selling souvenirs. You decide to buy a Denver Broncos keychain for your little brother. The keychain costs you $3.50. Your brother will be happy! You go back to the hotel, change for dinner, purchase a pack of m & m’s ($.75) from the vending machine, and walk to Barry’s Beef & Burger restaurant. After eating from the all-you-can eat Burger Buffet, you leave for the hotel to go swimming, and then get some sleep. The temperature is now 1º below zero, and you are freezing. You race quickly back to the hotel. Change into your suit, and head to the pool. The temperature of the water is a balmy 78º and feels great! You enjoy the basketball hoop in the water, and jumping off the diving board. Time to go to sleep. But wait, you’re hungry! Dad lets you order room service and you pick the chicken nuggets. Unfortunately, you don’t have enough money to pay for the nuggets, and now owe your dad $4.25. You tell him you’ll pay him when you arrive back home, and he gives you a smile. The next morning, you wake up, head home, and reflect on what a great day you had in Denver, Colorado. What are some positive and negative values from the story that can be marked on a number line? Using the worksheet, work with your group members to determine where these values will be placed on a number line.
