Running Start at Central Washington University is very pleased to be partnering with your school to offer this wonderful opportunity. Through our program, students are able to attend university level courses and receive college credit without leaving their high school campus. This is achieved by your high school administrators and teachers working closely with CWU faculty and staff to provide High School students with the highest quality courses possible. However, there are a few things that parents should be aware of before they decide to participate in this program. Every semester, your child will be able to take one college level course for free through Running Start or pay $55.00 per credit each trimester/semester. You will be charged for each additional course that you opt to take during a given trimester/semester at a rate of $55.00 per credit. Students begin building an official college transcript the moment that they begin taking part in this program. Therefore, if a student does well in their courses, they will build a transcript with a healthy grade point average; conversely, if they do poorly in their courses, it will be reflected on their transcript. It is important that students take these courses seriously because building a low college GPA now can cause many problems when students begin their college life after graduating from high school. In fact, it is actually possible for students to begin their freshmen year of college on academic probation if they receive too many low CWU course grades while in high school. Once a grade is given it will not be changed even if a student or parent is displeased with it. When applying to universities, students are required by law to submit all college grades that a student has earned. It is actually possible to receive a grade of 0.0 in a CWU course. Your child’s college grade point average can and likely will be different from their high school grade point average. Official university transcripts can only be obtained from CWU’s Registrar Services. Official transcripts will not be distributed by your High School or the Running Start Office. University deadlines for registration, dropping a course, and withdrawing from a course are nonnegotiable. o If your child drops a course, you will not have to pay for your course and nothing will be put on your child’s college transcript. o If your child withdraws from a course, you will still have to pay for the course even if your child do not complete it. Also if your child withdraws from a course, a “W” will be put on your transcript. Once your child enrolls in one of our courses, they have the option of becoming conditionally admitted to CWU. That means once they graduate from high school, they will not need to fill out a CWU application, pay the application fee of $50, or pay a confirmation fee. All they will need to do is send their high school transcripts and SAT/ACT scores to CWU and they are officially a new Central Washington University Wildcat.
