Literacy link – Information texts In preparation for this session, children to ask their Gran/Grandad (or an older member of the family) to share their memories of childhood from a questionnaire. Discuss what questions we might ask them. Ask your granny to answer the following questions: 1) What toys did you play with when you were the same age as me? 2) How did you keep in touch with your friends? 3) What sort of music did you listen to? 4) What sort of clothes did you wear? 5) What was school like? 6) What sort of food did you eat? 7) What did your house look like? 8) Did you have the same things in your house as we do now? 9) What year were you born? Bring back the questionnaires and share the answers with the class. As a class look at a picture of an old telephone. As the following questions: What is it? What could it have been used for? Why? English – Speaking and Listening Discuss toys/games/objects in our homes. What do we have? Which of these things do we think our Grannies did/didn’t have? Thinking skills – reading images – use a range of pictures for the children to choose – pair chn up in mixed abilities to get a range of descriptions. HOMEWORK Ask grandparents if they have objects from their childhoods which may be brought into school for display.
