ST. ROSALIE CATHOLIC CHURCH HARVEY, LOUISIANA God gave manna to the Israelites in the desert to feed their physical hunger, and Our Lord parallels this to Himself as the Bread that comes down from heaven. Jesus’ words in today’s gospel could not be more clear, as He repeatedly uses the words “flesh,” “blood,” “eat,” and “drink.” He is insistent that we eat His Body and drink His Blood so that we might have life within us. Nowhere in scripture do we get the impression that it is a ‘symbol.’ He does not say ‘Unless you eat of this symbol of my Body and Blood you do not have life within you.’ Symbols do not give life. Jesus is clearly speaking of Sacramental nourishment, the Eucharistic nourishment provided by the Blood of the Son of Man. Some people walked away when Our Lord said these words because they were hard to endure. Some people still do. By faith we know that Jesus is the Food which gives eternal life. When we receive Him in Holy Communion we become a tabernacle, of sorts, for Him. Let us spend some time in joyful thanksgiving for this miraculous Sacrament by which He remains with us, hidden under the appearance of bread and wine. Dear Parishioners, This weekend we celebrate the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ, commonly referred to as Corpus Christi. In the city of Port Chester, New York, the Salesians are responsible for administering a Church Parish called Corpus Christi. We all know their present Pastor, Fr. Thomas Ruekert sdb, who was pastor here at St. Rosalie some years ago. Every year on this solemnity, the Parish celebrates with a procession through the streets honoring the parish and the solemnity. The priests and parishioners march from Corpus Christi Parish to Holy Rosary church (another Salesian Parish). In today’s Gospel, Jesus says, “Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in them.” And he tells us that if we do not eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, we will have no life in us. The Eucharist is our nourishment, our true food, and without it we will face death by spiritual starvation. There are nearly 70 million nominal Catholics in the United States, the largest denomination in the country. But de facto, the fastest-growing group are non-practicing Catholics. They don’t attend Mass and don’t receive the sacraments. Looking around at some of the empty churches, we can see the mute evidence of these missing family members. They are deaths in our spiritual family. One of my favorite stories from the Old Testament occurs when God sends down manna from heaven to feed the people of Israel. God provided this food so that the people of Israel would place their trust in Him. In the first reading today from the Book of Deuteronomy, Moses reminds the people of this manna and how important it was to them, so they could continue their journey. I always thought it somewhat amusing that when the Jews tried to hoard their manna, it spoiled overnight. God was reminding the people of Israel that they had to trust in Him completely and not be self-reliant. Jesus reminds us today in the Gospel, about the importance of the Eucharist. Eucharist as miraculous and abundant feeding is characterized by the gift of eternal life it offers to all who eat and drink. The reality is, simply put, the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. It is not a symbol or a recollection. The real presence provides us with eternal life. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. I would like to apologize to all the ladies of the parish who provided sweets last weekend thinking there was a bake sale. I appreciate your hard work and support. God’s blessings upon all of you this week. Fr. John
