NWQ Active Learning Classrooms
Instructor Application and Agreement Forms
Instructions
Thank you for your interest in teaching in the Northwest Quadrant Active Learning Classroom (NWQ ALC).
Instructor applications are reviewed by the Northwest Quadrant Active Learning Classroom Committee. The
NWQ Active Learning Classrooms (ALCs) have flexible furniture and projectors, instructor consoles, and layouts with small group access to shared table space, computer-monitors, whiteboards, and the ability to display and exchange information across individual or multiple monitors and screens. Extensive media infrastructure is built into the rooms in order increase student engagement through interactive, collaborative learning with peers, and frequent use of small group pedagogy versus lecture approaches. More details on the
NWQ project are available through Campus Planning: http://www4.uwm.edu/uap/projects/
Please fill out and sign the following Instructor Application and Instructor Agreement Forms and return them to the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning: jones446@uwm.edu
.
Workshops on pedagogy, course design, and technology for the NWQ ALCs by the Center for Excellence in
Teaching and Learning (CETL) and Classroom Support will be offered fall, spring and summer.
If teaching a spring NWQ ALC: You must complete workshops and training in spring/summer prior.
If teaching a fall NWQ ALC: You must complete workshops and training in summer/fall prior.
Generally speaking, courses will not be accepted without an instructor assigned. Exceptions may be made if the course is specifically designed for heavy use of collaboration and active learning.
Instructors approved to teach in an ALC in a given semester will have priority to teach in these rooms again the following semester only. Interactive and active learning spaces foster increased engagement, peer relationships, retention, processing of information, and achievement. Typically, instructors find that class periods greater than 50 minutes work better for interactive and small-group learning.
Because there is a limited number of ALCs available, instructors and departments should expect to be flexible with the course offering time. The attached form provides space to include alternate meeting time preferences.
The committee looks to the following factors when determining eligibility for ALC use:
Eligibility and Room Assignment Criteria
Instructors are approved to teach with active learning pedagogy by the department chair/program director of the subject area being taught
Clear plans for implementing collaborative active learning approaches as a major component of the class; detailed plans and activity examples are recommended
Return of the signed Instructor Application and Agreement Form each semester requesting a NWQ ALC
Completion of workshops on active learning pedagogy and course design and NWQ ALC technology/consultations before the start of the first semester in which the class is being taught
Participate in NWQ assessment processes each semester
Classes that meet at least 75% of room capacity (current ALC max capacities are: 24, 36, and 54) and use standard meeting times http://www4.uwm.edu/registrar/faculty/soc/upload/time_scheduling_guideslines.pdf
Notification regarding placement in the Northwest Quadrant ALCs will be made according to the schedule at top of the Application Form and you will be notified by the ALC Committee following due dates below.
