Leadership and Service – Living Learning Community Application I. Overview The Leadership & Service Learning Community (LSLC) provides first-year students with an opportunity to live together in an environment that develops and enhances their leadership and service knowledge and practice through various components of education and engagement. Participants connect and form relationships with others who share their common interest in being a leader on campus and a servant in our community. This specific Living Learning Community is coordinated by the Center the Leadership and Service which seeks to educate and engage all students to lead and serve the global community. The LSLC is open to any incoming freshman who has a desire to learn more about leadership and volunteer in service to local agencies and individuals. II. Frequently Asked Questions Where will I live? o Massey Hall, named after former Dean of Men, Felix Massey, is a traditional-style residence hall that houses approximately 582 women and men. Massey features air-conditioned double-occupancy rooms which are conducive to establishing a closer community as well as a large courtyard which is a constant center of activity. Massey has large community bathrooms on each floor which are professionally cleaned every day. It features recently renovated rooms with new furniture, a workout facility, computer room, kitchens, post office and study lounges. Massey is centrally located on campus and is the closest Residence Hall to the University Center, a hub of activity on campus. How many people will be in my community? o 80: 40 men and 40 women. Massey has approximately 82-84 residents per floor, so the LSLC will be made up of two half-floors with a same-sex RA on each floor. What is the Center for Leadership and Service? o The Center the Leadership and Service is a part of the Division of Student Life and seeks to educate and engage all students to lead and serve the global community. The CLS provides a multitude of leadership and service opportunities to UT students including, but not limited to, leadership classes, weekly service opportunities, leadership certificate series and Alternative Break trips. What is a Living and Learning Community? o The Living and Learning Community (LLC) experience provides first-year students with a unique opportunity to merge academics and co-curricular involvement with their residence hall community. Participants will live with other LLC students on a designated floor in a residence hall, take classes together, participate in cultural and educational programs, and become involved in community events and social activities. This residential experience encourages students to make meaningful connections with their peers, faculty, and university staff and will ultimately assist students in their adjustment to college life. 2013-2014 Leadership and Service Learning Community Application- Page 1 Leadership and Service – Living Learning Community Application I.
