Transition for children with autism is really, really important. The planning is just absolutely essential
and the major transitions obviously happen when they come into prep and when they come into
Year 7 and that probably needs to be planned at least 6 months before, look going back 12 months
before with Student Support Group meetings. All those sorts of things are just absolutely vital,
visits…
There’s some really good resources out there on transition, there’s some from ACT Now out of
Monash University or their fact sheets. There’s a lot of PD available out of there and I think it runs
out of every region now anyway.
I think the other thing about transition is that we often forget the child who’s transitioning from Year
7 to Year 8 or one classroom to another in a primary school and that’s often where I get a lot of calls,
‘so this child was fine last year, what’s going on this year?’ So sometimes the information hasn’t
come across to the new teacher or the new teacher‘s just feeling a little unsure of what they should
be doing, and that’s usually where it falls down.
Sometimes we’re brilliant with the big transitions and we forget the little ones.
We also need to remember transitions occur with these children sometimes after a weekend,
sometimes it can be a problem going home after school and that could be the transition that’s
causing the problem. So we need to make things as predictable, understandable, the stress low on
the child so they can be really supported in their learning.
