Aims
To allow students to demonstrate their potential to succeed by showing a grasp of entry level subject-specific knowledge,
understanding, cognitive and subject-specific skills.
Learning Objectives
To provide knowledge and understanding of key business concepts including accounting, finance, marketing, operations and
HR within the context of a new business.
Learning Outcomes
A good knowledge and understanding of basic management theory and its application to the case study company Garbeau
made to measure. This will include an analysis of the importance of business funding, managing accounts, marketing principles
and its strategic role in product and brand development, competitor analysis (Porter), the intricacies of operations and the
relationship with key management concepts. To enable the student to have an understanding of the importance of HR and to
appreciate the demands on human resources. Students will be encouraged to understand the concept of the small business
and its importance within the UK economy.
The ability to apply this knowledge and critical understanding to the business environment and to increase the students ability to
understand critical business issues by an analysis of the case study company, discussion of theoretical concepts and direct
contact with owner managers.
The ability to analyse information and to make sound management decisions based on appropriate theoretical business
management concepts. To present an informed argument/analysis.
Competence in management skills, an understanding of the SME (small to medium size business) sector, the ability to source
information and ask questions (of an owner/manager) and to present written evidence of this competence.

Assessment
Written report to the management of Garbeau: made to measure on the key management issues facing them over the next two
years of trading. The report will focus on a financial, marketing and operations analyses whilst considering the resources
required to support the business through the next crucial two years.
