AUSTIN, TX – ZACH Theatre will close the 2014-15 Theatre for Family Series with Cenicienta a
bilingual staging of the Cinderella story in collaboration with Teatro Vivo on the Kleberg
Stage April 17, 2015 through May 29, 2015. Directed and written by Caroline Reck of Glass
Half Full Theatre and co-written by Rupert Reyes of Teatro Vivo, this bilingual stageadaptation of Cinderella is infused with found-item puppetry, Mexican culture, and humor.
Easily understood by Spanish and English speakers alike, Cenicienta learns to embrace her culture, familia, and the power of language to unlock her true potential. This production marks the second time that ZACH Theatre will be co-producing with Teatro Vivo, furthering their commitment to bilingual theatre and engaging the Latino/a community in Austin.
“ZACH is committed to doing a bilingual play for young audiences every year. We serve over
50,000 students, and over 60% are Latino. It is important for us to tell stories that represent them and their lives. We chose Cinderella to explore the theme of empowerment, the empowerment of a young girl who finds the confidence to overcome a difficult situation,”
ZACH Theatre Education Director Nat Miller said.
“We want to highlight what we consider to be the meaning of "Cinderella." Someone who rises above their challenges and has an unrecognized or hidden talent that allows them to do so. We found that many of the youth are Cinderella-like in that they have to overcome many obstacles in order to succeed and that their talents have yet to be discovered. We want to create a play that allows our Cinderella to succeed by using her talents, not by her beauty, “ explains co-writer and Teatro Vivo Artistic Director Rupert Reyes.
