Over the summer a further 302 projects were added to OASIS. At 2.42 new projects per day this figure is broadly in line with the previous reporting period (2.56 reports per day) compared to the average of 1.92 observed over the history of usage in Scotland.

There are now 4294 records in OASIS. The proportion of records at different stages in the work flow remains constant with minor fluctuations for the number of records at each stage of the process.

There are 21.98% of projects live with contractors (compared with 18.91% for the previous reporting period), 12.41% with the relevant HER (down from 14.75%) and 0.51% (from 4.76%) require validation by RCAHMS (figure 1). The proportion of completed records has increased to 65.1%

(from 61.58%) partly due to a concerted effort to clear the city of Edinburgh backlog.

Figure 1. Proportion of records at different stages of the workflow by OASIS reporting period.

During the period there has been a significant increase in the number of live records with contractors increasing from 49.12% to 62.98% - in real terms 141 new records started. There are 35.56% of records with HERs (from 38.4%) and 1.47% (from 12.4%) awaiting validation by HES.

2

Historic Environment Record validation

There has been a decrease in the proportion of records requiring HER validation from

14.75% to 12.41%. Generally there is good information flow from the contractors through the

HERs although there are notable exceptions where a backlog in validating records has built

(figure 2 and table 2). This is causing concern with those submitting their records as it delays the release of the reports through the ArchSearch grey literature library.

Table 2 presents the numbers of projects at each stage of the OASIS workflow by HER. The table highlights the percentages of record validated by each HER. The figures have been adjusted from previous reporting periods to exclude projects which have not been submitted by contractors.

Figure 3: the proportion of records at each stage of the OASIS workflow

Figure 3 shows the proportion of records at each stage of the OASIS workflow. There is a disproportionate emphasis on those HERs where there have been a small number of projects reported.

During the reporting period there was a concerted effort to clear the backlog of records awaiting validation at John Sinclair House (figure 4).

Training and new users

An information session was held at for post-excavation staff at AOC archaeology group covering both the main OASIS form and the Radiocarbon submission form..

Including curators, there are now 101 registered users for OASIS in Scotland – an increase of 5 from the previous reporting period. At least some of the new users (have registered so that they could submit applications through the radiocarbon database.
