2015 Paddle Challenge Briefing Notes - - - - Keep Hydrated and apply Sunscreen To complete this event you must be a competent swimmer and be able to perform a self-rescue or be wearing a PFD. All competitors under the age of 14 must wear a PFD regardless. Canoeing WA does recommends that you carry a PFD in craft Each paddler is responsible for ensuring their craft has sufficient buoyancy If you see a person capsized you have duty of care to make sure that person is ok. There will be a duress time taken into account post-race (please see Officials if necessary). Be aware of boating traffic, and stick to the right hand side of the river at all times. Be aware of fishing lines on the bank of the river. Canoeing WA has the right to disqualify or pull craft off the water. If you do require assistance from a safety craft please signal by raising your arm above your head and wait for a craft to arrive. If you do pull out from this event at any stage you need to advise us immediately. Please call the mobile number on the back of the meal voucher. Ideally you will inform the rescue boat closest to you as they circle. Any false starts will be given a 5-minute penalty. We do have a video camera at the start so if you are identified we will impose the penalty No Wash Riding powerboats, there will be spotters to make sure this doesn’t happen, and will write down numbers of guilty crafts. If two boats are approaching each other, head on both boats turn right (starboard) All courses must start between marker and jetty 18km Course - Two waves for the 18km- Plastics go first, with Non-Plastics starting 5 minutes later. Start between the orange buoy and the edge of the jetty, Seed yourself relevant to your ability, and if you are about to be passed hold a predictable and consistent line. Paddle upstream to the second railway bridge just after Guildford Rd Bridge and turn in anti-clockwise direction around the first two pillars. Proceed downstream past Garratt Rd Bridge, down the main channel past Maylands boat yard. Turn left around the bottom of Ascot Waters Island, and paddle through the Ascot Waters canal back to the main channel Paddle back underneath Garrett Road Bridge and finish underneath the timing gates, adjacent to the Jetty. 2015 Paddle Challenge 11km Course - Paddle upstream to Ron Courtney Island / Ascot Kayak Club, turn anticlockwise around the island Proceed downstream past Garratt Rd Bridge, down the main channel past Maylands boat yard. Make a left hand turn around both boating markers, before taking a left turn though the Ascot Waters canal back to the main channel Paddle back underneath Garrett Road Bridge between the marked pylons and finish underneath the timing gates, adjacent to the Jetty. Guppy Course 3.5km 6km - Paddle upstream to the red spit post just before the Tonkin Highway bridge, turn anticlockwise around the post Head downstream to Garratt Rd Bridge and make a clockwise turn around bridge pylons Proceed to start/finish line next to jetty. Paddle upstream to Ron Courtney Island/ Ascot Kayak Club turning left-hand (anticlockwise) around the island Head downstream to Garratt Rd Bridge and make a clockwise turn around bridge pylons Proceed to start/finish line next to jetty. Reminders As you know there is not a large bank area here at the finishing point. So can we all please assist each other to take the crafts further up the grass. Keep moving after entering the timing arch at finish line to avoid congestion
