Meteorology Assignment #2 Mary Dowden per.2 Meteorology has been an interesting subject to learn about. In my life, thus far, I haven’t really understood what they were saying on the news. I usually just asked my parents what to expect from the weather. Taking a meteorology class has really broadened my views about the weather, and how things across the world can affect the weather where I am. Now that I know about different things that effect the weather, I can tell what is going on outside. I don’t have to rely on what my parents say anymore. When I watch the weather on television I can tell what they are talking about and how it will change the weather where I am. When watching the weather on television, they will talk about how the warm/cold front is moving, and now I know that it is because of the jet stream that they are moving in. I feel like I can relate to what they are saying, instead of just simply watching the weather. For the general public to be able to learn about the weather, I think, would help everyone understand what to expect from what they see outside of their windows. They could be able to see how serious severe storms can be. Knowing this, we can become more prepared in case something happens and we have to take cover. Especially in places where severe storms happen often, it would be really important to me to be able to understand the warning signs of severe storms. I think that there would be fewer fatalities from storms, because people would know what to do and how to react to storms. Learning about meteorology has enhanced my life, because when I am driving with my family somewhere and I see big dark clouds against the mountains, I know that there could be some precipitation. My family likes to hear what I have learned in school, and for me to relate it to real life makes me feel that school is actually teaching me things. It is kind of cool to be able to understand what the weather on the news is talking about. I can see how things affect each other. But there are times when I think that I know what is happening in the weather, but it turns out that what I said was going to happen doesn’t. This confuses me, and sometimes I get frustrated. But, I am still learning. If one of my friends asked me if they should take a meteorology class, I would ask them what they already know about the weather. If they have a basic understanding, then I would totally recommend it; if they didn’t have a clue about it, I might not recommend it, because it is hard to just jump into it. It took a while for me to grasp the concepts that we talked about every day. If people really want to understand how the weather works, and will spend the time to study it, then this is the class for them. But you can get a basic knowledge of the weather from watching the weather on the news.
