ODC ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE APPLICATION 2015-2018 PROGRAM INFORMATION Four individual dance artists are offered commissioning, critical discourse around their work, national networking, administrative guidance, and performance opportunities over three years. The Artist-in-Residence Program at ODC Theater offers a crucial developmental opportunity for San Francisco Bay Area mid-career dance artists. These artists bring wonderful expression, variety, and quality to our region’s cultural life and with adequate resources can make long term contributions to the field. The ideal candidate has been professionally choreographing for a minimum of five years, demonstrates a clear and distinct artistic vision through compelling work, and possesses an appetite for critical discussion. ODC Theater’s residency is marked by three distinguishing characteristics: 1) Commitment to longitudinal artistic development 2) Commitment to infrastructural development over time 3) Commitment to long term, professional sustainability Artists-in-Residence are eligible for the following opportunities designed by ODC in collaboration with funders and presenters nationwide: • Creative Space. Resident artists are allotted 80 hours of fully subsidized space annually for the duration of the residency at the ODC’s Mission District campus in which to create and rehearse. • Choreographic Response Teams (CRT). Each core Resident Artist develops a two person CRT to promote greater intellectual breadth for the artists; enough diversity of response to provoke artistic decision making by the artist; and access to senior dance artists and mentoring relationships that are trustworthy and stimulating. The two person feedback teams, who receive stipends for their participation, offer a thought-provoking context for the process of realizing a new work. The team becomes conversant with the artists’ intentions and acts as catalyst for reflection. The make-up of a CRT will be comprised of one member from ODC artistic leadership – Brenda Way, KT Nelson, or Kimi Okada – and another professional of the choreographer’s choosing. To date, in addition to the required ODC artistic staff member, artists have chosen a casting director, choreographers, dramaturges, a playwright, a designer, and a poet. • Administrative Support & Mentorship. The parameters include one-on-one sessions throughout the year with Deputy Director Christy Bolingbroke – covering strategic planning, capacity building, fundraising, artistic planning, marketing and budget management, as well as other opportunities as they arise; a mandatory annual one-day retreat with the entire cohort, artists’ CRTs, and ODC staff and an Administrative Fellow or high-level work exchange student subsidized by ODC. In addition to these specific activities, resident artists also have the opportunity to learn from and liaise with other ODC team members including Writer-in-Residence Marie Tollon. • Technical Residency Weeks. Each resident artist will receive at least one technical residency week during the three-year residency period. This includes fully subsidized time and technical labor in the Theater to work with collaborators and designers to better realize a work’s production elements. It also includes an artist discretionary fund that may be used for dancers, collaborators, documentation, etc. ODC ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE APPLICATION 2015-2018 • Commissions & Performances. Each resident artist will be awarded at least one $5,000 commission during the course of his/her residency. ODC works with the artist to leverage this financial commitment to secure additional funding. The work will premiere on ODC Theater’s mainstage either as a presentation or copresentation. Additional performance engagements – fully presented or co-presented – will be scheduled or booked as artistic plans align.
