JOB DESCRIPTION Job Code : JOB TITLE Academic Study Skills Tutor SCHOOL/DEPARTMENT Library and Learning Resources Team POST HOLDER Vacant REPORTS TO University Librarian RESPONSIBLE FOR Providing underpinning curriculum study skills support for students in all subject areas JOB CONTEXT Provision of maths/literacy and information literacy study skills JOB PURPOSE: To provide responsive support to deliver maths/literacy and information literacy skills for a wide range of students to enable them to develop strategies to cope with the demands of their academic work and aid learning success and student retention A. PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES A1. To assist in creating an effective learning environment for students. A2. To assess new students’ academic study skills needs using a variety of techniques. A3. To assist students to develop individual learning strategies.by teaching and developing study skills in maths/literacy, information literacy, research and analysis, organisation, time management and motivation. A4. To utilise Moodle, create learning objects and use other learning opportunities to support academic study skills provision across the University. A5. Contribute to the development of the academic study skills provision and contribute effectively to the University’s retention strategy across all subject areas. A6. Undertake relevant administrative functions and collaborate in projects as a team member of the Library and Learning Resources Team Modified 3/08/2007 A7. Evaluate and document student progress and the effectiveness of the study skills strategy. A8. To liaise with colleagues in the Library and Student Services, academic leaders and programme leaders to establish the required level and type of development necessary in order to inform a targeted approach to study skills. B. PERSONAL ACCOUNTABILITIES B1. Act in a professional manner at all times and maintain confidentiality of information. B2. Maintain an appropriate awareness of and work effectively within the policies and procedures of the University participating in appropriate processes, e.g. appraisal, Continuing Professional Development, Health and Safety, Peer Observation etc. B3. Act in support of the University’s Health, Safety and Environment Policy by working safely and following the procedures and codes of practice derived to protect you and others. EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS The person appointed should hold a good honours degree (preferably higher) or equivalent in an appropriate subject and have experience at delivering maths/literacy and/or information literacy study skills to students. Ideally the appointee will have experience of delivering in a HE environment. Excellent communication and organisational skills will be required and you must be self-motivated with a professional attitude and be able to work both as a member of a team and independently.
