ADMINISTRATIVE DIRECTIVE IIAA-7/01 Procedures for Textbook Selection and Adoption TO: All Principals, Administrators, and Supervisory Staff FROM: Dr. John H. Kidd, Division Superintendent DATE: July 1, 2001 In order to establish procedures for School Board Policy, IIAA Textbook Selection and Adoption, the following guidelines are stated: 1. Textbook selection committees will be appointed by the School Board, upon recommendation of the Division Superintendent, in the year of the subject area adoption. The committee shall be chosen with representation from all schools/levels affected by the adoption. 2. Although the evaluation committee will have the responsibility for recommending a textbook to the Superintendent and the School Board, all classroom teachers of the subject fields in which adoptions are to be made will have an opportunity to evaluate the textbooks and materials under consideration. 3. The evaluation committee will include, when appropriate, parents, teachers, supervisors, and non-parent patrons. 4. The School Board will make the final decision on adoptions and announce the list of adoptions to all schools in time for preparation of book orders for the subsequent year. 5. Textbooks and workbooks are to be provided free of charge to students. 6. Students are accountable for books issued and subject to payment for lost or damaged books. 7. Textbooks are to be collected and stored in the individual schools during the summer months. Minor repairs will be made and unusable books will be replaced by the Media Center. Book covers will be furnished to the schools and should be used. 8. Schools may retain the consumable materials fee and other fees for classes certified by the Assistant Superintendent as non-textbook courses for instruction. 9. Textbooks, manuals, teacher editions, and adoption samples provided by Rockingham County Public Schools remain the property of the said school division. 10. Summer school fees and other charges may be collected from resident students. Summer school fees are set annually and approved by the School Board and shall include tuition, and materials fees for non-resident students. 11. Only the Supervisor of Media Services has the authority to dispose of textbooks and other adopted material. (continued) AD-IIAA-7/01 (page 2) 12. A high school student may purchase an Advanced Placement (AP) textbook under the following conditions: a. the book(s) must be purchased before the class begins; b. the purchase price of the book will be the full cost and should include shipping/handling which is normally around 6% of the price; c. schools should inquire as to the publisher and cost of the book(s) from the Supervisor of Media Services; d. schools should order the number of books needed directly from the company; e. schools should set up a separate A.P. textbook fund locally and pay the company directly without involving the media center except for ordering information; f. continue to provide textbooks for A.P. students who do not wish to purchase a book.
