Twilight Tuesdays – Horticulture Classes in Fauquier
The public is invited to learn more about various horticulture topics this season. Virginia Cooperative Extension
and Fauquier County Master Gardeners are presenting a series of twilight workshops. All classes will start at

Feb 26th – Want to start a farm?
This class is an orientation to the Northern Piedmont New and Beginning Farmer training offered by Fauquier
County Agricultural Development, Virginia Cooperative Extension and the Fauquier Education Farm. The five
month training will cover a wide range of topics related to starting a farm. Much of the training will happen
through online trainings. This will be supplemented with seven on-farm Saturday labs. Come and learn if this
class is right for you. The orientation starts at 7pm.





March 12th – Spring Lawn Care
This lecture will cover the basics of maintaining a healthy lawn. The instructor will cover different types of grass
that grow good turf. Taking a soil test will be explained. The appropriate time and amount of fertilization will be
covered. Common turf problems will also be mentioned.





April 23 – Perennials for the Passionate Gardener
This event will cover a range of perennial flower choices. The instructor, Karen Pearson, will share her years of
experience as a gardener. She will use the demonstration garden at the historic #18 School House in Marshall
to highlight various plant possibilities. She will also address deer and other pest issues as well as the
challenges of starting plants from seed.





Where: Schoolhouse #18, 7592 John Marshall Highway, Marshall, VA
Parking: Parking is very limited at the Schoolhouse. All participants are expected to park at Northern
Fauquier Community Park and take the short walk over to the gardens and schoolhouse.

April 30th Vegetable Gardening for the Summer Harvest
This training will focus on the basics of establishing and caring for a vegetable garden. The instructor will
discuss different vegetables to grow and how to be successful in the Piedmont. Emphasis will be placed on soil
testing and management of various pests.





June 11th Create your own Hypertufa Planter
Fauquier County Master Gardeners will walk you through the creation of your own hypertufa planter. This
mixture of concrete and other materials produces a pot that looks like volcanic stone pots created in Italy
centuries ago. Please note that you will need to plan to return to the farm a week later to retrieve your planter
after the materials have cured.






September 17th The Wide World of Boxwoods
Come and learn about the many different varieties of boxwoods that are grown in this area. A discussion of
boxwood pests will also be presented. The instructor will also give hands on demonstration of how to
propagate boxwoods. Please bring a clear plastic container that will hold potting soil.





October 1st Arboretum Walk
Join Sharon Holmes and Tim Ohlwiler for a walk in the Arboretum at Rady Park. The arboretum was
established in 1999 and is starting to show some maturity. Learn the history of this hidden gem at Rady Park
and discover some new trees and shrubs that do well in this area of Virginia.




