PART 1 - GENERAL
1.1
DESCRIPTION

All drawings and all sections of the specifications shall apply to and form an integral part of this
section.
1.2
COMMISSIONING
.1
Refer to Section 01810 Quality Commissioning for the details of the commissioning process.
1.3
WORK PERFORMED BY THIS SECTION
.1
Provide labour, material, equipment and services necessary for the supply, installation, and
connection of the systems shown on the drawings and hereinafter specified.
.2
Provide Municipal and Utility street services connections including water, sewers, gas, air, catch
basins, manholes, and all other plumbing systems as indicated on the plans.
.3
Terminate fire protection supply within building with shut-off valve. Further details of fire protection
work are specified in Section 15500.
.4
Provide make-up water connections to heating and cooling systems and trapped condensate drains
from all cooling equipment.
1.4
QUALITY ASSURANCE AND REGULATORY COMPLIANCE
.1
Execute work of this section only by registered apprentices and licensed tradespersons regularly
employed in the installation of all gas, plumbing, drainage piping systems, site water supplies, and
drainage services.
1.5
SUBMITTALS
.1
Submit shop drawings for all equipment.
PART 2 - PRODUCTS
2.1
GENERAL
.1
Supply, install, and completely connect all plumbing fixtures shown on all drawings including
Architectural and Mechanical drawings. Be responsible for protection of all material and equipment
until Owner accepts building.
.2
All fixtures including trim shall be CSA approved, free from flaws or blemishes, and subject to
approval of Consultant.
.3
All finished surfaces shall be clear, smooth, and bright, and guaranteed not to craze, discolour, or
scale.
.4
All fixtures shall be completely installed and connected to drain, vent, hot, tempered and cold water
piping in approved manner.
.5
All visible parts of trimmings of all fixtures, including faucets, shower heads, piping, escutcheons,
wastes, strainers, traps, tail pieces, supplies, stops, etc. shall be heavily chrome-plated. This shall
also apply to work at all NIC equipment and fixtures.
.6
Except where specifically noted otherwise, supply and install screwdriver stop valve on hot and cold
water supply to every fixture, in addition to valve or faucets on fixture itself.
.7
Provide adequate supports for all piping, equipment, and fixtures. Have these built into surfaces with
back-up plates where support is required.
.8
Provide traps on drains and stops on supplies for all fixtures and equipment.
.9
Provide domestic water, vent and waste connections to all equipment requiring plumbing services.
This shall include NIC items shown on architectural and mechanical drawings.
.10
Provide shut-off valves on water connections at each piece of equipment.
.11
Connect water and drain to all heating and air-conditioning systems and equipment noted in the
specifications or shown on the drawings.
.12
Provide rough-in and connections to all miscellaneous equipment as required.
.13
Provide fixtures complete with all required trim.
.14
All exposed trim to be chrome plated. Fixtures to be white unless specified otherwise.

Provide individual stops on each fixture water supply.
Provide C.S.A. traps in required sizes with cleanouts.
All supplies to be flexible chrome plated copper tube type. Braided flexes or plastic tubing are not
acceptable.
Piping shall be pitched and valves installed to facilitate complete drainage of the system.
All piping run within the building shall be concealed in the finished portions of the building in pipe
spaces, ceilings, or furred chases and exposed only in mechanical rooms and where indicated on
the drawings.
No pipe shall pass in front of or interfere with any openings, doors, or windows or points of access.
Headroom in front of openings and doors shall in no case be lower than the top of the opening. No
pipe shall pass in front of or interfere with clearances around mechanical equipment.
Piping shall not pass exposed through electrical rooms, voice/data rooms, or be erected over any
switchboard or other electrical gear (except as may be required by local code for fire suppression).
50mm (2”) clearance shall be provided between insulated piping and other obstructions.
No union shall be placed in a location that will be inaccessible. Unions shall be installed adjacent to
all equipment to allow for repair and replacement.
Flexible piping connections shall be provided at piping connections to all rotating mechanical
equipment, and at piping connections to all equipment mounted on vibration isolators. Connectors
shall have a pressure rating suitable for the piping systems in which they are installed.
2.2
ACID NEUTRALIZER
.1
Acid neutralizer - electronic monitoring - on floor or flush with floor: SMS Series AN MODEL No..
Acid Neutralizer with SI-XLG Sediment Interceptor, polyethylene tank with gasketed 30mm (1½")
thick combination poly and non-skid aluminium scoriated cover with stainless steel bolts, MJ inlet,
outlet and vent connection, 300mm (12") inspection cover, probe assembly with electronic and
appropriate length of coaxial cable to reach panel from tank. Control panel consisting of Model 47
Ph monitoring alarm panel 120V; 5A draw. Provide extensions 'E' (if required) to meet invert of pipe.
Fill with initial charge of limestone neutralizing chips 2" (50mm) dia. size.
Spec. Note: if sediment interceptor is required, add "WITH SI-XLG SEDIMENT INTERCEPTOR"
Spec. Note - Use the following in Part 3 as required
[This trade to provide 1" ID (25mm) conduit from 19mm (¾") FIPS tank adapter to PH control panel.
If coaxial cable is required to be more than 50' (18M) provide a PH Signal Amplifier.]
2.3
AIR COMPRESSOR AND DRYER SYSTEM
.1
Existing compressor capacity shall be verified before tying in new devices.
.2
When after coolers are specified on air compressors, they shall be air-cooled or shall be cooled with
recirculating process water. Water cooling through equipment to a drain is not permitted.
.3
Compressed air piping above grade shall be Schedule 40, black steel conforming to ASTM A 53.
Fittings shall be malleable screwed end.
.4
Provide an intergral compressor, receiver, motor and aftercooler unit with integral controls. All
components to have ULC or CSA labeled.
.5
Compressor shall be capable of 7.9 ALPS (16.8 ACFM) at 1205 kPa (175 PSIG). The unit shall have
removable cyclinders, 2 stage compression, finned copper intercooler, lubrication and a cast iron
block.
.6
Receiver shall be ASME rated and shall have a copacity of 300 litres (80 gallons). The receiver shall
be mounted vertically, and the campressor pre-piped to sit on top.
.7
Motor to be TEFC and all electrical devices and controls to be located behind spray tight gasketted
panels. Unit to automatically start and stop to maintain a user specified operating pressure.
.8
Provide an ASME pressure relief valve sized for the maximum volume of air at 825 kPa (120 PSI).
Locate downstream of receiver.
.9
Provide auto vent with an adjustable release time, at the bottom.
.10
Provide a refrigerated air dryer sized to maintain maximum 3.9 ºC (39ºF) dew point. The unit shall be
designed to operate up to the mazimum pressure of the compressor. The refrigerant shall be R134A,
and the unit shall operate automatically when the compressor is delivering air. Ingersol rand SDR
aircooled dryer.

Provide an air pressure gauge and regulator discharge from the dryer. Unit to be capable of being
locked in position to prevent vandalism.

Quick Couplers: ARO full bore 9.5mm (3/8”). Provide 1 on each piping drop.
Hose Reels: Provide two hose reels with auto rewind and 6 m of 9.5mm (3/8”) hose. Locate 1 over
each work bench in the auto shop. Provide a quick connect on the end of each hose.
Dirt pockets to be 150 mm (6”) deep, complete with ball valves and threaded end caps.
Lubricators to be provided at each outlet with polycarbonate bowls.
Air Filters: Provide a small micron filter with a three valve bypass, removable cartrige and auto drain.
2.4
AUXILLARY DOMESTIC WATER CONNECTION
.1
National Fire Equipment Model 153 Wall Hydrant Connection, 1½” NPT female x 1½” male hose
thread adapter, brass cap and chain, complete with brass escutcheon plate with raised lettering
stating “WALL HYDRANT”. Water connection to be rated for a pressure of 300 psi.

Supply piping from hydrant shall be routed to incoming water service and connected upstream of
premise isolation backflow device.
.3
Install check valve and isolation valve on auxiliary water service pipe upstream of connection to
permanent water service.
2.5
BACKFLOW PREVENTERS
.1
Provide a backflow preventer on any piping supplying potable water to a heating, chilled water,
condenser water, sprinkler or any process piping system where chemical treatment or anti-freeze
solution is used or where chemicals are conveyed. Backflow preventers are to be compliant with the
latest edition of CAN/CSA B64 as published by CSA.

Water service sizes ¾” and 1”: Union bronze body construction, stainless steel replaceable check,
relief seats, shafts and bolts, rubber check valve and relief valve assemblies, bronze body quarterturn ball valves, bronze test cocks, bronze strainer. Unit to be equal to Watts C-U-909 QT-HW c/w
Watts model 777 strainer.

Water service sizes 32mm (1¼”) to 50mm (2”): Bronze body construction, stainless steel replaceable
check, relief seats, shafts and bolts, rubber check valve and relief valve assemblies, bronze body
quarter-turn ball valves, bronze test cocks, bronze strainer. Unit to be equal to Watts 909 QT-HW,
c/w Watts model 777 strainer. Provide union connections upstream and downstream of each
backflow preventer.

Water service sizes 65mm (2½ ") and larger: Interior epoxy coated cast iron body with stainless steel
internal parts, replaceable bronze seals, bronze relief valve with stainless steel trim, epoxy coated
strainer, OS & Y resilient seated gate valves, bronze test cocks. Unit to be equal to Watts 909 QTHW, c/w Watts model 777 strainer. Provide union connections upstream and downstream of each
backflow preventer.

65mm (2½ ") and larger: Reduced pressure zone assembly consisting of two independent torsion
spring check modules, a differential pressure relief valve located between and below the two
modules, two drip tight shut off valves and required torsion spring modules and relief valve to be
contained within an accessible sleeve housing constructed from 304 schedule 40 stainless steel pipe
with groove connections. Torsion spring checks shall have replaceable elastomer discs and in
operation produce drip tight closure against the reverse flow of liquid caused by back pressure or
back siphonage. Unit to be equal to Watts 957 OSY c/w model 77F-D1-FDA125 strainer c/w 408
OSY RW valve upstream of strainer.

Double check valve with intermediate atmospheric vent: Watts #9D continuous pressure type with
intermediate atmospheric vent. Chrome plated where exposed in finished areas.

Hose bibb: 19mm (¾") #8 bronze body vacuum breaker with stainless steel internal parts. Chrome
plated where exposed in finished areas.

Lab vacuum outlets: T & S Brass BL-4000-01 single cock or BL-4200-0 double cock units.

Backflow preventer drains: Pipe relief opening on backflow preventer to suitable drain. Diameter
shall be a minimum of one pipe size larger than relief opening and be fitted with an approved air
gap.

Provide minimum 32mm (1¼") clearance between backflow preventer body and adjacent structure
(wall, ceiling, etc.) and equipment to facilitate removal.
2.6
BYPASSES

Bypasses shall be provided around all water meters, control valves, and pressure reducing stations.

DOMESTIC HOT WATER HEATERS

The installation shall include a steam hot water heating unit for winter use, and electric water heaters
for summer use or other periods when steam is shut down on campus.
.2
Provide where shown on the Drawings [and detailed in the equipment schedules], electric domestic
hot water heater(s) with enamelled steel jacket over CFC free insulated [(l) gal. ] storage tank
complete with [ ____ watt thermostatically controlled immersion heater], [storage tank and heater
capacities as detailed in the equipment schedules] hose end drain valve, ASME rated relief valve
and heavy duty anode rod as manufactured by Rheem/Ruud. Tank(s) of equivalent capacity and
quality as manufactured by John Wood are also acceptable.
2.9
DOMESTIC HOT WATER HEATER - GAS FIRED FORCED DRAFT
.1
Provide as shown on the Drawings, natural gas fired metal clad and insulated domestic hot water
heater in size and capacity as described in the Equipment Schedules and with features as follows:

Constructed to ASME code Section IV and ULC requirements and hydro-statically tested at 190 psi
minimum. Tank to be equipped with removable flange mounted modular energy package with a
minimum diameter of 575mm (23"). Tank access to be by removal of this energy package. Provide
an easily removable rear module access cover with a minimum diameter 575mm (23") for simplicity
of tank access and energy package cleaning and maintenance. All fittings to be Type K
copper. Only non-ferrous alloy tank connections to be provided.

Two operating thermostats set at 43.3C (110F) for lower and 48.90C (120F) for upper tanks
respectively with maximum circulating water temperature in the plumbing system at 48.9C
(140F). One temperature limiting device to prevent temperatures from exceeding 93.3C (200F).
An ASME temperature and pressure relief valve set at 875 kPa (125 psi) and 98.9C (210F)
maximum.

Unit insulation of heavy density fiberglass jacketed with segmented 22 gauge steel panels with
factory baked enamel finish. Each panel to be interlocked for easy removal and replacement without
causing damage. The entire water heater to rest on heavy duty skids.

Combustion chamber to be completely lined with copper. All fire tubes to be pure copper.
.6
Forced draft power type burner with cast aluminium housing that provides an overfire pressure in the
module and all heating surfaces. Burner motor with electrical power characteristics in keeping with
project design power supply.

GAS DETECTION UNIT

Provide Macurco CD-2, 12-24V input electronic gas detection unit complete with relay and solenoid

detection unit one foot below highest point of ceiling. Provide gas detection units in all new rooms
with gas turrets.

with extension to suit invert depth from trench drain, with 100mm (4”) inlet and outlet connections.

Interceptor With Secondary Chamber, duco coated inside outside CR steel, removable sediment

double vent connection, deep seal trap with cleanout and bottom debris trapping leg. Flow rating of
35 GPM (125LPM). Provide extension 'E' (if required) to meet invert of pipe. (TPT - trap primer
tapping). Provide 2" (50mm) connecting piping between the interceptor and secondary chamber and
two 2" (50mm) vents to roof. All to manufacturer's and local code requirements.

- Water hammer arrestors shall be installed on cold water piping to rooms where flush valves are
used.
- Any quick-acting automatic valves supplying equipment shall also have water hammer arrestors
installed.
On projects exceeding five stories in height provide water hammer arrestors on domestic water
risers. Locate arrestors at the end of riser opposite supply source. Arrestor shall be two pipe sizes
larger than the riser is at the connection point, not exceeding the largest pipe size diameter in the
riser.

PIPE INSTALLATION

General: Install straight, parallel and close to walls and ceilings, with specified pitch. Use standard
fittings for direction changes.

Install eccentric reducers in horizontal piping to permit drainage and eliminate air pockets.

Where pipe sizes differ from connection sizes of equipment, install reducing fittings close to
equipment. Reducing bushings are not permitted.

Install brass and copper pipe and tubing free from surface damage. Replace damaged pipe or
tubing where damaged.

Ream ends of pipes and tubes before installation.

Lay copper tubing so that it is not in contact with dissimilar metal and will not be kinked or collapsed.

Flush domestic water piping with a sufficient flow to produce a velocity of 1 metre per
second for ten minutes, or until all foreign materials have been removed and the flushed
water is clear. Provide connections and pumps as required. Open and close valves,
hydrants, and service connections to ensure thorough flushing.
When flushing has been completed, introduce a strong chlorine solution into the piping and
ensure that it is distributed throughout the entire domestic water system. Disinfect the piping
in accordance with AWWA C601-68. The rate of chlorine application to be proportional to
the rate of water entering the pipe.
The point of chlorine application to be close as possible to the point of filling the piping and to
occur simultaneously. Operate valves, hydrants and similar appurtenances while chlorine
solution is in the piping. Flush piping of chlorine solution after 24 hours.
Arrange and pay for water quality tests to be performed by an independent testing laboratory
acceptable to the Consultant as follows:
.1
Test for chlorine residuals at extreme ends of all piping systems. After a
chlorine residual of not less than 50 ppm has been achieved in all parts of the
system, let the system stand for 24 hours. After this period, take further samples to
ensure that there is still not less than 10 ppm of chlorine residual throughout the
system.
.2
When chlorine residuals of 10 ppm have been maintained for a minimum of 24
hours, flush the system and refill to put the system into service.
3.10
SPECIALITIES INSTALLATION
.1
Floor drains: Provide with trap primers connected to nearest cold water flush valve, or to automatic
primer or flush tank. Prime all floor drain traps.
.2
Provide, for all floor drains located within air handling unit plenums, deep P-Traps with 100mm (4")
water seal minimum.
.3
Non-freeze wall hydrant: Install 360 mm (14") above finished grade (unless otherwise noted) and
with inside shut-off valve.
3.11
TESTING
.1
Test piping in accordance with procedures outlined in Section 15050.
.2
Ensure that insulated piping and equipment installed in concealed places is tested and inspected
prior to permanent concealment.
