Directions: In your groups review your chapter from Chapters 7-18. Your group will need to summarize your chapter describing the key events that occurred, note any items that have added to your understanding of the protagonist or antagonist(s) or which have helped with advancing the plot. Use the vocabulary from each chapter to enhance your description. Avoid pronouns and vague, unhelpful writing by including character names and specific details wherever possible. The objective of this project is to help you clarify what is happening, who is who, relationships between characters and the plot, clarify vocabulary meanings, and solidify your overall comprehension of these chapters. Chapter 5 has been utilized to model expectations. Following each summary include a statement or two reflecting on the content of the chapter. You may want to use one or more of the following sentence starters:
I didn’t understand why…
I can’t imagine if I…
I was shocked when… I would be devastated if…
Why would… I felt relieved when…
Helpful hints – Take turns reading the chapter, discuss the chapter, and the ideas you have for accomplishing this group project. You may split the work between your group members; one reviewing your chapter while another – secretary-writing your thoughts on scrap paper, or writing your final draft unto this sheet. Read aloud what your group has written: does it sound correct? Did you write what you meant to write? Did you use the vocabulary words within your response? Did you include details that help you understand the material (action) within the chapter and understand the characters better? Chapter Five

Review: After trying to escape captivity to go get help with Jacque LeRoy’s chestnut stallion, Barbara is brought back, by Galasko and some of the other Indians, to the clearing near the creek. Regina is disturbed by the stunned look in Barbara’s eyes. Regina cannot fathom what may have been done to her sister. Galasko wraps a rope around Barbara and he and Shingask bind her to a dead ash tree. Regina pleads to Galasko and then Shingask; but
Shingask looks hurt because he feels as if Barbara has betrayed him. Regina pleads with the other captives to help her help her save her sister. Suckachgook piles twigs and pine boughs around Barbara because the Indians plan to burn her as Elizabeth said they would. The Indians begin to chant. Galasko gives Barbara a Bible to read but it is written in French, so he gives her another in German. Barbara begins to read the Twenty-third Psalm, Father’s favorite which he read when they were sad and troubled. Regina finishes the Psalm, saying it aloud by memory for her sister because Barbara starts to cry so hard she cannot read it. Shingask talks to Barbara, who says, ‘No run.’
Shingask pleads to his father Galasko for Barbara’s life because he wants her to be his wife. Galasko says, if
Barbara is brave, like nianique, the wild cat and stops crying she will be spared. Barbara continues to cry until the flames burning near her feet are about to engulf her. Regina feels helpless but decides that she can sing for her sister. She sings that God is like a fortress or bulwark; that He is like a defense upon one’s enemies or foes. The hymn says that amid, or among, life’s troubles that God will succeed or prevail. Regina and the other captives sing this song amid the chants and then threats (rifles pointed) of the Indians. Little Johann gets lit on fire by
Suckachgook, but Peter rolls the young boy on the ground until the flames are out. Barbara bows her head for a long moment before raising her face. Regina is flooded with feelings of relief because Barbara’s eyes look full of life again and she says, “Untie me.” Her voice is full of tears but she isn’t crying. Galasko signals for Shingask to untie
Barbara. She and Regina hug one another with the Bible between them, and memories of their family as the ash tree burns.
Reflection: I can’t imagine how difficult it would be to stop crying if I were as frightened as Barbara. If I had seen all she had seen and was then tied to a tree about to be burned alive. I felt touched and empowered by Regina’s decision to sing a powerful hymn because I have sung songs in the past to help calm and reassure myself. I felt relieved when Barbara was untied and spared.
