Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the university. (This section is used for advertisement of the position.) The Manager, Nevada Proteomics Center, oversees the operation and maintenance of the mass spectrometers for proteomic analysis. The current instrumentation enables Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) researchers to perform discovery and targeted proteomic analysis. The Manager is responsible for the preparation and analysis of samples as well as providing workshops for faculty, staff, and students in the area of proteomics. The Manager is also responsible for the preparation and submission of instrumentation grants to enhance the facilities and assisting researchers in the preparation of proteomic research proposals. The position reports to the Director, Idea Network of Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE) within the office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation. 2. Provide enough detail to enable a person outside the department to understand the job (percentage first with heading and then bulleted information). 40% - Instrument Operation and Scheduling Prepare and analyze samples for testing Provide maintenance, cleaning, and trouble shooting of ,mass spectrometry instrumentation, i.e., a Thermo Scientific LTQ Orbitrap and a Finnigan Polaris Q ion trap (mass spectrometors) and two Michrom Paradigm 2D HPLC, etc. Work with users and represent several departments in several colleges to manage operations and set schedules for operation which maximize efficiency and core output Develop proposals for grants for new instrumentation funding and assist academic faculty with finding and developing proposals for proteomics related research (i.e., National Science Foundation (NSF), National Institutes of Health (NIH), etc.); act as Principal Investigator on shared equipment grant 20% - Personnel Training and Administration Train students and postdoctoral associates who wish to use the mass spectrometers and provide assistance in preparation of samples for experiments to ensure accuracy of data Provide workshops for current and potential users Set policies on the use of each instrument and for what analyses; certain analyses is conducted exclusively by the Manager due to the nature of the versatile but complex spectrometer Work with the Proteomics Steering Committee in ensuring smooth functioning of facility Delegate work, supervise, and evaluate Staff Research Associate and Research Biochemist 15% - Data Interpretation and Experimental Design Assist users in the experimental design and interpretation of data Provide data management, interpretation, and dispersal of results to users 15% - Instrument Maintenance Diagnosis of computer hardware and software problems, swapping of circuit boards, and utilizing the assistance of university IT technicians when necessary to keep instruments functional Ensure preventative and corrective maintenance of instruments Research and submit equipment funding requests to ensure equipment is up to date Position Description – Manager, Nevada Proteomics Center Page 3 5% - Technical Expertise Level Maintain up-to-date technical expertise through literature review, participation in conferences such as the American Society for Mass Spectrometry (ASMS) Meeting ,and participation in innovative distance education forums such as electronic bulletin boards 5% - Recharge Accounting Prepare timely and accurate accounting of time spent by users on analyses for recharge account; assist with setting of rates for services Order supplies and spare parts as appropriate 3. Level of Freedom: The Manager is responsible for the maintenance of the mass spectrometer and for the operations of the MS Facility at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR). The Manager provides hands-on training and monitors students and faculty in the use of the instrumentation. The position works closely with INBRE staff, VPRI, and the Controller’s office in setting and managing recharge rates and activities. The individual works closely with the Director, INBRE, and the Vice President, Research, on decisions associated with the position, i.e., approval of grant submissions for funding of new or repair and maintenance of equipment, general consultation on program goals and strategies, etc. Impact: Inadequate performance may result in delays or inefficiencies in the completion of work needed by students and faculty. Errors result in loss of time and inconvenience within the department/program. Quality and timeliness are essential for continued extramural funding. 4.
