3. Green Roofs on campus-Morgan
a. Foreign Language Building- “Green Roof”
b. Water-no definite plan in iCAP
i. Storm water not being addressed
c. Why address now, if these problems were not considered with Ikenberry
i. Structural problem (not considered part of building design scope) and then we
want to fix these problems later
d. High priority for campus / F&S – affect future proposals to do green roofs?
e. Project Budget
i. F&S arranged with consultant for FLB to hire Landscape architect, JJR
ii. Established overall budget of $500,000 (including design) has to include
consultation, soil survey, design for green roof for whole thing, rock soil into
rain garden, and construction
1. Half of budget will come from AFMFA (equivalent cost of funding
normal roof with pavers)
f. What about storm water analysis instead of a green roof, given that handling storm
water is the expressed primary motivation?
i. Does green roof make sense in a green area, such as the quad – main value is in
heavily built up areas?
ii. Are other options being considered – swales, rain gardens?
g. How much storm water is it supposed to handle? What is the value of this?
i. JJR will do that in their analysis
h. Type of plantings (intensive, extensive, sedums, grasses, natives, trees) -impacts value of
roof
i. To what degree its worth spending money
i. Asking LAS to contribute to cost of project
i. Wouldn’t be able to do much but could pitch in around $50,000
1. Leveraging that to make them raise funds-which no college has done
4. Greg and PSL
a. Approved curtains $120,000 loan plus $5,000 grant for metering.
b. Couldn’t start this semester-move to January
i. Put bidding through purchasing and got a contractor
ii. However, F&S has a problem with them going through purchasing
iii. F&S believes there needs to be more engineering
iv. Asked if SSC could facilitate a solution
c. Is this an install or a capital improvement
i. Metallic framing, curtains, special seals that conserve around 20% of energy
d. Was there a policy change for requiring JOC (Job Order Contracting)?
i. If there is will not be done over winter break
ii. JOC hurts budget
iii. Get F&S to do installation-may fix problem
1. Ralph and Ruth are set on contractor install (has experience)
e. Maybe watch and wait a week
i. A Fair amount of back and forth
f. Problem similar to Dance Project (issues with campus unions, due to insecurities around
campus layoffs)
i. Asbestos being improperly handled (maybe)
1. Obtained money for F&S Asbestos abatement and ceiling work, that
facilitated students being allowed to do remaining work (painting,
window sealing, lights, flooring, etc)
5. Sustainable Landscape Coordinator
a. Got complicated, taking a step back and just give Chancellor list of objectives for this
position to be created
b. Condense to 5 things we want to see
6. Students- Saturday the 6th at 9am planning meeting
