1.

Foreign Language Green Roof Project a.

Suhail met with LAS, they have been out of the loop since the summer i.

Talked about why it is important to the LAS

1.

Significant water damage problems in FLB where comp labs are and losing equipment to water damage

2.

Turn the area into a more friendly student space ii.

The college could do 25 thou b.

Nate and Jeff: i.

90 yr old drainage system with damage, will be at 10% flow and city of Urbana has not money to repair – being fixed but tree roots will grow to block it again in

4-5 years ii.

Green Roof

1.

Collect and hold the storm water, Size proportional to water held a.

Architects set up a 50/50 scheme with pavers and green roof

2.

Will cost 250,000 more than pavers a.

Just for the green roof is expensive b.

Is 50/50 enough to plan for storm water of 10 yrs c.

Though Doyle and Associates also set up some space for a rain garden to hold excess water i.

A pipe will go from south side to wrap around to north side- may not be feasible

3.

Jeff and Nate’s opinion split money between green roof and use the remaining on a rain garden

4.

Could be an obvious, visible statement of sustainability iii.

Storm water management

1.

Whole street of Matthews is the problem not just around FLB

2.

Could feasibly install rain gardens on campus property to hold water and detract from flow into Matthews st. drain.

3.

Number were calculated from numbers of Doyle and Associates numbers of planned rain garden

4.

None of the rain garden sites are on the master plan iv.

Ideally-some green roof and some rain garden v.

Also keep in mind that City of Champaign and possibly Urbana in the future will charge for volume of storm water and will apply to the University vi.

Only concern was rain fall from the building, not Matthews problem c.

Interaction i.

Seeing is some sort of interaction unique since most green roofs are on top of buildings d.

Costs i.

Marginal compared to others since we don’t need to retrofit roof for strength or replace roof membrane ii.

Increases life span of roof because less damage due to heating and cooling, expansion, and so forth e.

Energy i.

Should be roughly the same because of heat conduction though that area does not require a lot of heating

2.

Biodiesel a.

Stage to development of 400 gallon reactor system b.

Account is closed out c.

Report needs to still get clarity d.

We tried to cancel the project a year and half ago i.

Been on the books on three years e.

If they do not have an operational 400 gallon does not work we need our money back i.

Been very difficult to communicate f.

Reach out to new director at ISTC and Will Kellehler i.

Tell them that our funds have not been used appropriately ii.

Committee is considering requesting a return of those funds

3.

End of semester pizza meeting a.

Ask amy to borrow a projector b.

Meeting is 101 NRB c.

Send info to classroom in NHB

Bring sustainability professionals using SORF a.

Exp: Surplus- Michigan State has the best sustainable surplus site and can also involve stakeholders on campus i.

Speak on campus of what we should do and connection to people on campus b.

None of this should come from our budget c.

10,000 pool for SORF, sustainability professionals are not expensive compared to big name speakers that are 5000 d.

Suhail will make a google doc of contacts
