Date 11/5/10 Friday 1pm at 19 Temple Buell Hall Student Committee Meeting Secretary- Stephanie Zec Students: Isaac, Suhail, Steph, Greg, Amy Allen, Amy Yanow, Kevin, Jenny, Nathan and Lauren 1. Welcome new committee members Lauren Turk and Kevin Wolz 2. Please fill out doodle listing availability on reading day, meeting will be likely to go over one hour 3. Small student projects a. For student driven projects b. Need feedback to be approved for the next meeting 4. Weatherization a. Currently looking for letter of support from F&S b. Training from building research council for students i. All basic lighting, weatherization, and possible waste management c. Big hitch: i. F&S wants to use buildings that aren’t metered 1. Cheapest temporary device (electric) is 700 and with installation near 1000 2. F&S does not want to install it themselves because the data isn’t worth it from small buildings 3. Steam metering even more expensive 4. Possible to do some assessments w/o metering d. Need a letter of support from SECS and SSC i. SSC is willing to help oversee and advise intern ii. Also ask for SECs thermal camera and blower door e. $500 is enough money for an RSO 5. FLB green roof a. Put together a budget they don’t have funding for i. AFMA only covers a base case scenario which is half of the project ii. Overall project total around $500,000 1. At the most we do $250k and as low as $75k b. Last year in confusion of F&S reorganization and staffing changes, many people leaving, etc - the project was forgotten about c. Interim solution- temporary gravel on roof till F&S can afford green roof i. Really not a good idea ii. Leaves more than 10,000 sq. ft in a prominent location just covered with gravel. Unusable for any purpose, and no infiltration / storm-water benefits d. e. f. g. h. i. j. k. l. m. n. o. iii. Which is why the green roof came back to us 1. Want project bidding to start in December F&S really likes Green roofs- and are proud of new roof of INHS on oak street Message: If SSC don’t fund this green roof, SSC (and students) do not want any green roofs If it is to happen we need to be a part of it i. Can negotiate that green roofs are a part of campus standards to be funded by AFMA ii. Can also ask LAS for assistance This project needs to be decided fast i. Storm water management need to be considered- could be our funding commitment 1. Campus wide issue of storm water must bigger and we need to push through sustainable landscape master plan Want a green roof because i. Green roofs are not very visible on campus 1. Would a connection be made, will it be visible as a green roof? ii. College and departments are for it 1. It makes a spatial connection to houses on Nevada iii. Constraints on storm water on Mathew st 1. Hard to change anything by the quad Is project about green roofs or F&S jumping the sustainability ship Krannert designed differently and much more small and currently tray style. Tray style undesired at this location. Anything substantive at Krannert will be very expensive - around $1 million due to sheer size of Krannert. First time F&S came to us. Number for project: average around $110,000 possibly i. Good value for money, storm water, how much roofing we ultimately get ii. Push for $50k from LAS and Campus iii. Managing the rest, with appropriate changes of scope, is up to F&S Committee should get final approval of design before releasing funds. Project should do a good job on education, engagement, storm-water management, etc. Use our green roof interns to help with evaluation. 6. Landscape Coordinator a. Meeting next week b. Brian is talking to Mike Bass c. Most important components in scenario i. Supporting student engagement, students involved in plant implementation ii. Native plants and natural landscape-overall goal iii. Which unit houses this? d. Started as a vision of creating a living classroom i. Problem of position becoming self sustaining 1. Not our responsibility but Universities e. Standstill till everyone provides feedback 7. Next week’s meeting a. Okaying guiding vision b. Green Roof will come up again (NO! ) 8.
