SUMMER ASSIGNMENT ENGLISH LANGUAGE This work is set to help you make the transition from Year 11 to your Post-16 studies. This assignment involves: Reading Research The resources you will need are: Newspaper articles Scrap book for collating ideas Parts of Speech sheet with 8 key terms Written work Learning key terms INSTRUCTIONS: Summer Task Your first summer task is to create a Language Hunting Scrapbook split into two sections: Section 1 needs to contain at least five articles relating to the English Language or to ideas about Language in general (use newspapers, newspaper websites and dedicated websites and books to help you find relevant, interesting articles). Stick the articles into your scrapbook, and annotate at least 3 of them with observations, comments and questions. Section 2 needs to contain at least 10 texts, linked by a common theme. You will need to source texts that have different purposes, audiences and forms. Include email/texts/internet pages etc. Stick the articles into your scrapbook, and annotate at least 4 of these with observations, comments and questions to do with the language and forms used. Possible themes: Cookery, Camping, Classical music, Cycling or others of your choice. Your second summer task is to refresh your memory with the 8 parts of speech on the sheet and feel free to research further terminology around grammar. Reference: You need to purchase the reference book below; it contains very helpful definitions of grammar terminology, and will be very useful for both AS and A2, should you continue with English Language next year.
