During the driving event, Continental showcased a series of advanced solutions and systems built around the theme of safety, intelligence and green so as to address the multiple demands from the China market, yet again emphasizing Continental’s strong commitment to grow together with China auto market in a long and sustainable way. The exhibition integrated advanced technologies from Continental’s five divisions, echoing Continental’s brand essence of “The Future in Motion”, and further presents Continental’s strong expertise as one of the leading automotive suppliers in covering the entire value chain to serve OEMs with integrated solutions.

Advanced solutions offer prospects for safe, intelligent and green driving technology

Continental is dedicated to localizing its whole industrial chain, sharing technology with customers and developing high-performance customized solutions. Meanwhile, for better meeting needs from the China market and offering prospects for future driving experience,

Continental has developed several technologies for handling current social issues such as road safety, environment protection, energy saving and vehicle intelligence, etc.

Under the commitment of realizing “Vision Zero”- a future without road accidents, Continental is concentrating on safety solutions to offer safer mobility for everyone. During the driving event Continental demonstrated the current innovation of electronic brake systems. In the electro-hydraulic MK C1 , the brake actuation, the brake booster and the control systems

(ABS, ESC) are combined into a compact, weight-saving braking unit, while simultaneously increasing its braking performance. In addition, Continental Tires’ outstanding wet grip performance helps to shorten braking distance and provide higher road safety via new extended mobility technologies such as SSR (Self Supporting Runflat) and ContiSeal.

In order to cope with rising social concern regarding environment protection and energy saving, Continental is committed to addressing it s “Clean Power” in China. One important solution is the “ 48 Volt Eco Drive ” system, which can bridge the gap between traditional 12V electrical network and higher hybrids, and offer many higher level function and fuel economy benefits. Continental Tires ’ remarkable low rolling resistance can help to reduce fuel consumption significantly in an environment-friendly way. Also Continental presents Active

Vibration Control Systems that can maintain and even improve NVH (Noise, Vibration and

Harshness) when new drive systems are used for fuel increased economy and reduced emissions. Two examples would be to offset the effects from elimination of engine balance shafts or addition of cylinder deactivation.

Guided by “Always On”, Continental focuses on optimizing vehicle connection with advanced products and system solutions. Continental enables wireless charging of all Qi-compliant devices (e.g. phones, cases, sleeves, adapters). Wireless Power Charging can offer seamless charging of mobile devices in the car, enhanced comfort due to elimination of charging cables with high integration, efficient space utilization and state of the art foreign object detection.

Continuous R&D effort to satisfy the high expectation on automated driving in China showed by market research

Besides offering timely solutions for safety, intelligence and green technology, Continental proactively pays att ention to Chinese customers’ needs and focuses on local market dynamics. During the driving event, Continental shared the result of “Continental Mobility

Study 2013”, which was originated from a representative survey among car drivers in China,

Germany, U.S., and Japan, on the topic of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and automated driving. The results show that a clear majority of participants welcome technologies of automated driving: 79% in China, 77% in Japan, 53% in Germany, and 50% in the U.S. A clear majority (66 %) of those Chinese participants can see the benefit of a suitable technology for long trips by car. The highest acceptance indicates that Chinese consumers in general are more open for new technologies and functions compared with the consumers in other markets.

In China, one in two motorists have already had an accident while at the wheel, with rearend collisions the most common cause of accidents. 45% of participants in China have already experienced this type of accident while driving.

79% Chinese motorists surveyed view the option of having the vehicle take over the driving task as a useful future development.

The majority of Chinese motorists surveyed estimate that automated driving will be part of everyday life in ten to 15 years.

Continental sees increasing demand of ADAS technology and expects that the Chinese ADAS market will follow the strong development like the other developed countries on mid-term.

Continental is constantly monitoring and evaluating the situation to see which ADAS systems are fitting best for China. A lidar-based Emergency Brake Assist City with crash avoidance by lower speed will probably be the first ADAS product in the Chinese Market. Currently

Continental strengthened local ADAS support and will continuously expand the team according to the market development.

Continental keeps contributing to its strong commitment of realizing safer, greener and more intelligent future driving. Currently, more than 1,300 Continental specialists are working on the

R&D of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems and automated driving. Continental aims to achieve partially automated driving by 2016, highly automated driving by 2020 and fully automated driving as technically feasible by 2025.

With sales of around € 33.3 billion in 2013, Continental is one of the world ’ s leading automotive suppliers. As a provider of brake systems, systems and components for powertrains and chassis, instrumentation, infotainment solutions, vehicle electronics, tires, and technical elastomers,

Continental contributes to enhanced driving safety and global climate protection. Continental is also an expert partner in networked automobile communication. Continental currently employs around 186,000 people in 49 countries.
