Plate Tectonics- Continental Drift Goals: 1. Describe the hypothesis of continental drift. 2. Identify evidence supporting continental drift. Continent- one of the six or seven great divisions of land on the globe Continental drift- hypothesis that continents have moved slowly to their current locations; (insert sample sentence) Pangaea- large, ancient landmass that was composed of all of the continents joined together; (insert sample sentence) Controversy- argument or debate Wegner- thought the edges of the continents looked as though they could fit together like pieces of a puzzle. He hypothesized that they actually had all fit together at one time to form a single continent that later broke apart. He called the continent Pangaea because the word means “all land.” Evidence for Continental Drift Fossils Rock Climate Seafloor- portion of Earth’s crust that lies beneath ocean waters; (*insert sample sentence) Seafloor Spreading-theory that new seafloor forms when lava erupts at a mid-ocean ridge; (*insert sample sentence) Interval-a space of time between events
