Rick Blaine, a callous expatriate nightclub owner in a
wartime way station, has his world turned upside
down when his lost love, Ilsa, returns. Rick has vowed
to stay neutral and uninvolved in the anti-Nazi
activities that surround him in Casablanca, but his love
for Ilsa may force him to take sides and become
involved.
Symbolism:
1. Rick symbolizes America, with his desire to remain
neutral in World War II … note his solitary
tendencies.
2. Searchlight symbolizes the ever-present Nazis
3. Vichy Water (at end) symbolizes the corrupt Vichy
French government who were aligned with Nazi’s.
