I- Read the following text then do the tasks below:
Mel Fisher had always been interested in diving, and
in the 1960s', at the age of forty, he moved to Florid to
hunt for treasure full time. Over the next twenty years
he, his wife and other diving friends had many
successes, finding thousands of gold coins and other
items from Spanish galleons sunk in the 1700s.
But there was one ship they were looking for in
particular- the Atocha, a Spanish ship that sank in
1622.
The search for the Atocha was long and difficult. On
many occasions they thought they had found the main
treasure of the ship, but it never was. The search also
brought tragedy. In 1975, Mel's son Dirk, Dirk's wife
Angel and diver Rick Gage were lost at sea. The hunt
for the Atocha cost three lives altogether.
Finally, ten years later Mel Fisher and his team found
what they were looking for- and they were not
disappointed. In the first two weeks, they pulled up 77
gold bare, 1041 silver bare and lots of jewellery and
boxes of gold coins. Over the next two years they
brought up far more. The value of the total find was
between $200 and $400 million.

Until recently, people often disposed of waste in open holes
in the ground, called open landfills. But these open dumps
were dangerous. Rainfall dissolved some of the chemicals
from the waste, forming a liquid called leachate. Leachate
could pollute the soil, runoff into streams and lakes, or
trickle down into the groundwater. Some countries have
banned the use of open dumps. Another type of landfill is
called a sanitary landfill, which is specially constructed to
hold the waste material more safely. A sanitary landfill
holds municipal solid waste, construction debris and some
types of agricultural and industrial waste. Once a sanitary
landfill is full, it is covered with a clay cap to keep
rainwater out.
Even well- designed landfills can pollute the soil and
groundwater. And while capped landfills can be reused for
some purposes, such as parks, they cannot be used for
housing or agriculture. Another solution is municipal solid
waste composting. With this technique, all the solid waste
that a community produces can be composted. This would
dramatically reduce the volume of waste disposed of in
sanitary landfills One disadvantage of this type of
composting is that heavy metals and toxic pesticide
residues may be left in the compost.
