The Society of Glass Technology [SGT] Centenary in 2016
In preparation for The Society of Glass Technology [SGT] Centenary in 2016 the Melting
Technical Committee [MTC] has a busy year planned. Neil Simpson Chair of the MTC said
“In addition to the Annual Furnace Solutions (9th June) and Training Day (8th June) at Lucideon
in Stoke, the MTC has also committed to organising a Centenary Furnace Solutions on 8 th
September as part of the Society Conference on 8th September at Sheffield University and
release an Edition 2 of “A Compendium of Glass Melting”.
Compendium
For those not familiar the Edition 1 of “A Compendium of Glass Melting” was published in
June 2012. This is a unique, CD-based document that contains almost 100 papers, PowerPoint
presentations and lecture materials. With over 60 authors, it represents more than 1,000 manyears of ‘hands-on’ experience and covers all aspects of glass melting science and practical,
glassmaking technology. It is targeted at glassmakers, furnace designers and specialist
industry suppliers. http://www.sgt.org/store
Iain Shoveller who leads the Compendium Sub-Committee advised “We already have a
significant amount of new material to add from our subsequent Furnace Solutions and new
Training Days. The MTC are reviewing SGT Journals from 1999 for additional presentations
that we have perhaps missed. Many of you may have heard, written or made presentations
which would be relevant and worthy of inclusion in this proposed Edition 2. If you have any
digital copies which we are entitled to include can you please send to Lisa with appropriate
permissions.”
Training Day 4 – Energy and Environment 8th June 2016 – Lucideon Stoke on Trent
Nicola Johnson who leads the Training Day sub-committee said “With the Government Energy
Savings Opportunity Scheme [ESOS] this year and Industrial Emissions Directive [IED]
coming next April the MTC felt that Energy and Environment was an appropriate subject. We
approached all of last year’s attendees and also British Glass’s Energy & Environmental SubCommittee with all agreeing a good topic. Our intent is that we will have our successful panel
discussion again this year”.
Furnace Solutions 11 9th June 2016 – Lucideon Stoke on Trent
Nigel Longshaw leads the Furnace Solutions sub-committee commented “Following our
successful 10th Furnace Solutions we were inundated by requests to present this coming year
and provisionally we already have a full program. Whilst we are awaiting topics and final
presenters we are expecting presentations from Linde, Global, CelSian, Stara, Elster, FIC,
Lucideon, PSR and Sibelco.”
Furnace Solutions Centenary 8th September 2016 – University of Sheffield
This one off Centenary event will recognise 3 of the 4 Garvey Award recipients for the best

confirmed speakers are Richard Hulme, John Naughton, Dave Dalton and a representative from
Fives. This day’s event will be part of the ESG and jointly with Glass Trend.

with a couple of telephone meetings depending on events. We currently have +20members

subject. We are always looking for new members. We have a conference call scheduled for
10th December and a meeting at SGT on 14th April. Please contact Christine if you would like
to know about upcoming meetings.
Many thanks
Neil G Simpson – Chair of Melting Technical Committee
