Be aware of all safety regulations – ask, don’t assume. Locate emergency eyewash, safety shower, fire extinguisher, emergency exit.

Dress properly for the lab. No open-toed shoes, no high-heels, no shorts. Confine long hair and loose clothes.

Safety goggles and lab coats must be worn at all times.

Before lab starts you must be knowledgeable about hazard and safety precautions of each chemical you are using. State in your lab notebook all H+P statements for each chemical.
5.
Follow directions/procedures in the lab book. When in doubt – ask! It is prohibited to perform unauthorized experiments. No horseplay. Do not distract your lab fellows.
6.
Never eat, drink, chew gum or tobacco, or apply cosmetics.
7.
Wear gloves when working with chemicals. Wash your hands well before leaving the lab.
8.
Clean your lab bench, your work space, and keep the balance clean. The TA may ask you to clean balance if necessary. Refusal to do so will cause 10 points subtraction from your lab.
9.
Report all major spills and breaks to your lab assistant.

For a chemical splash in your eyes/face flush with water in safety eyewash. For chemical spill at your body use sink for minor and safety shower for major spills. Wash 15-20 min. Note that there are no floor drains. Ask immediately for assistance.
11.
Dispose broken glass and any used disposable glass items (melting point capillaries, pipets) in the “Broken Glass Disposal” box. NEVER dispose any glass items in trash bin!
12.
Dispose all chemicals in the designated waste container (solid/liquid waste).
13.
Cell phones and all other electronic devices must be powered off during entire lab. It is not allowed to leave the lab to use cell phone or electronic devices.
14.
All back backs and personal items must be stored in the cabinet. They should never be placed on the lab bench.
15.
If you are under certain medical condition (such as diabetes, pregnancy, or epilepsy) you must report it to your lab instructor.
