Expanding Your Child’s Vocabulary
(continued from Dec.)
Make Sure Your Child Knows How to
Use the Dictionary
The best tool for learning the meaning of
any new word is the dictionary. Make
sure your child understands what can be
found in a dictionary. Open the
dictionary together and look for these
things:
Guide Words- Found at the top of each
page
Main entry- The word in boldface type
found in ABC order
Pronunciation- In parentheses you will
find how to pronounce each word. At the
bottom of the page you will usually find
a pronunciation guide.
Part of speech- noun, verb, adjective,
preposition, etc.
Definition- Each meaning of the word
will be numbered.
Example sentence- Shows how a word
may be used.
Syllable structure-Shows how to divide
a word into syllables.
Math Corner
Stress Mental Math
Calculators are great, but the people using
them still need to know if an answer is
reasonable. So children need to learn to
estimate the answer in their heads. More to
come about this in our February newsletter.
